Newsweek: Massive fraud allegations in California: What we know

“What we’re trying to do is paint a picture,” he explained. “With, you know, a heavy caveat as to the accuracy of the number, but we think it’s going to be at least $250 billion … and probably more than that once you get into it.”

“What’s actually happened is the pandemic spending has been baked into the regular spending trajectory,” he said. “That’s what’s happened. So my estimate is that we’re really talking about the explosion of spending around the pandemic which has been carried into normal budgeting.”

President Trump, meanwhile, dubbed California “more corrupt than Minnesota” while announcing a federal probe into alleged fraud in the state early Tuesday. Minnesota Governor Walz announced he planned to abandon his quest for a third term amid an ongoing multibillion-dollar fraud scandal. A day earlier, Hilton and Morgan wrote a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi requesting an investigation into purported “systemic fraud and fiduciary negligence” in state-funded programs.

I used to think we could only balance the budget by cutting programs. In the last year, I have become certain that we can balance the budget by simply eliminating fraud. Kick in some waste and abuse elimination and we probably have a healthy surplus.

Don't you think that if I were wrong that I would know it?

Hell, the amount of fraud going on with stuff like disability is crazy.

It was like 20 years ago I was watching an undercover special on some small town in Virgina somehwere that had like the highest rates of people on disability and they went there to find people at Walmart on payday just stocking up on BS and there were all these doctors in town who basically ran their office out of a strip mall where you could come in and get a disability rating for nothing, so all these people were on Social Security Disability collecting $$$.

There are so many people out there doing this shit, and no one cares enough to stop it.

Allegations mean nothing but the 2026 RepubliCON campaign strategy of making up shit about blue state spending fraud is kicking in,

Quote
In 2026, a key part of the Republican campaign strategy involves messaging that highlights alleged widespread waste and fraud in social safety net programs within "blue states". This is part of a broader effort to portray Democratic-led state governments as fiscally irresponsible and to justify the withholding of federal funds.

Key Aspects of the Strategy
  • Targeting Federal Funds: The Trump administration has taken concrete actions, such as freezing billions in social services funding for several Democratic-led states (including California and Minnesota), citing concerns about fraud and lack of data sharing.
  •
  • Public Messaging: Top Republican figures, including President Donald Trump, have made public statements vowing to "get to the bottom" of this alleged fraud, a message amplified by conservative media outlets like Newsmax.
  •
  • Focus on Specific Programs: The alleged fraud claims frequently target programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Medicaid, and childcare programs.
  •
  • Lack of Evidence: Critics, including Democratic officials, have strongly pushed back against these claims, arguing that the administration has not provided detailed evidence of widespread fraud and that the actions are politically motivated "retribution" that harms vulnerable populations.
  •
  • GOP Internal Politics: The issue has also featured in internal GOP discussions, with some Republican representatives from blue states negotiating for increased state and local tax (SALT) deductions as part of broader tax reform legislation.
This strategy aims to create a "culture war boogeyman" for fundraising and voter mobilization by focusing on fiscal accountability in Democratic states, contrasting it with their own proposed policies.
