kilkee Posted June 2, 2006 Report Posted June 2, 2006 Euthanasia By James Bredin Assisted suicide should be an easy decision, People should be allowed to end their lives with precision, Forget locked-in sanctimonious religious stuff, Democracy; the will of the people should be enough. We should just pass a law and fill in all the details, No need to get worked up about this or send e-mails, No need to be sick for years just lying around, Sign the papers, take the pills and down in the ground. Call family and friends together on the appointed day, Tell them you’re going to die and there’s no other way, Maybe say goodbye and have a little cry, The final decision is yours; when and where to die. No need to live in a seniors’ place for years and years, Or to die slowly sick in hospital amid your fears, Just tell the undertaker where to shove you in, You can beat them all and go out with a grin. Even tell the preacher he can come if he’s not upset, He can even preach a sermon and there’s no need to fret, You’re going to heaven for all eternity, You have decided to leave this earthly fraternity. newbie Posted June 2, 2006 Report Posted June 2, 2006 It's not a black and white issue that your little poem suggests. Both of my parents suffered, and near the end, when no hope of recovery was possible, they were given extra morphine and/or had feeding tubes removed. There was only one word used to describe what our family ultimately decided: compassion. We treat some of our animals better than some of our dying parents. Quote
theloniusfleabag Posted June 2, 2006 Report Posted June 2, 2006 My own poem, in rebuttal... The doctors once told me, "You are to die", Of time vaguely when, of certainly why. They swore to uphold, "God's time" or their's, But never mine own. Quote Would the Special Olympics Committee disqualify kids born with flippers from the swimming events?
Charles Anthony Posted June 2, 2006 Report Posted June 2, 2006 I enjoyed both poems. The clever use of rhyming patterns and meter is hard to find these days. As pieces of language art, they are both refreshing. You two receive high accolades from me. Long ago, I tried to follow a local coffee-house reading series. I struggled through the presentation of incredibly tiresome modern poetry. So many times the snarky jerk in me wanted to interrupt and say: "duh... your poems do not rhyme... why not??" just to be stupid but I always bit my tongue and tolerated the sloppy verse. CAVEAT: As far as the subject matter is concerned, my faith is not logical. There is no point presenting or defending my view on euthanasia.
