For us, globalism was never about the economics. We were the only market to survive World War II. The only thing we asked from the world was to stand in front of us and the Soviets. Those days are over, been over since 1991 to be frank. George Bush senior tried to renegotiate this contract but was quickly forced out of office by his own party. Trump has now force the issue front and center. But the question remains, what do we want? If I had to guess, it would be, to be left alone. American isolationism is very tempting when you live on a continental sized island. Except for the Canadians, they’re screwed because we own the island (we want full and unconditional surrender). 

Clues from the US military procurement budget support this isolationist idea. Money is spent on new planes, ships and missiles, while those equipment can be used for attack and defence, they are not design for occupational use as those operation would require a build up of logistical equipment like food storage and field kitchen , supply truck etc... 

So while America can definitely reach out and destroy, they do not seem interested in nation building at this time.
