To Survive the NDP Must Turn Sharply to the Left

Hmmm, talk about hard left - lets hope they adopt these policies, it would bode well for the CPC, allready in majority territory.

Over thirty activists, based in fifteen different NDP constituency associations spread across southern Ontario, gathered in Toronto on May 20 -- their goal: to take the fight for anti-war, anti-imperialist policies, and for greater democracy and socialism, to the New Democratic Party federal convention in Quebec City, September 8-10, 2006.

The NDP Socialist Caucus Conference adopted a package of thirty-three bold policies, designating sixteen of them as priority resolutions. The latter feature calls for: removal of Canadian troops from Afghanistan and Haiti, solidarity with Palestine, social ownership and economic democracy, abrogation of the global corporate trade deals (FTA, NAFTA, etc.), elimination of university tuition fees, repeal of the federal Clarity Act, a massive increase in social housing construction, along with measures to enforce leadership accountability and to strengthen democracy in the NDP. In a separate discussion on plans by NDP officials to change the party's federal constitution, SC conference participants approved a structural proposal that would increase local riding and union representation on the NDP Federal Council, the highest party body between conventions which meets twice a year.

Canada is center-left. So why move farther from the center? IMO moving farther from the center they will not gain them votes, rather just the opposite.

Good point. If Layton is serious about sticking a knife through the heart of the Liberals he will edge slightly towards the centre if anything.

Why shouldn't the NDP engage the Liberals for all left of centre voters?

The policy in the OP will pearpetuate the NDP being locked out of power. If the NDP engages the Liberals, they just might win. Then they could (maybe one day) form government, yikes...

I wouldn't describe over thirty activists as fairsized, its a bit like saying the Canadian armed forces has a huge personnel surplus. I also do not belive that the average NDP member or Jack layton, is stupid enough to ratify such things. If they are, the response will be simple and overwhelming, myself and hundreds of thousands of other Canadians will ask Jack Layton for the votes we loaned him to be returned with interest.

Thank you very much but Canada already got a taste of what would happen if we ever elected an NDP government to power in Ottawa. That lesson was learned by the election of Bob Rae and the NDP in Ontario, and it goes to show that the NDP are nothing but Liberals in disguise, bebause didn't I jusat read somewhere that Rae was now contemplating a run for the leadership of the federal Liberal Party. Just what Canada needs another spending spree on useless programs with taxpayer's money. The only thing that we could be sure of under an NDP government is a massive tax bill to pay for all of these feel-good programs.

No sir, I once voted exclusively NDP, but that was before I woke up to the reality that Canadian's are already being heavily taxed from birth to death, and I can't afford more social programs that will do nothing except make Canadian's even more dependent on government to make all of their choices for them. Thanks, but no thanks!
