I am Jefferiah, cuz I am Jeff and well I just thought Jefferiah sounded cool. I use Jefferiah for a lot of things online cuz jeff is always taken. Sometimes I find everything is taken, like on Yahoo, and you have to come up with a name like RedBlueMonsterPickleTreeStamper. Then yahoo says "sorry that name is taken try RedBlueMonsterPickleTreeStamper134". So then you give in. And thats your ID henceforth.

Yeah metric makes a lot of sense. Being all divisible by tens you know. But still the old system has something about it that people cant shake you know. I live up here in kilometre land, but I weigh myself in pounds, and I often describe thicknesses in inches. And in Canada where we order Pizza by the diameter, not by the slice, we measure it in inches too. I could not imaging ordering a 35 centimeter pizza. The earth rotates, but I still like to watch "the sun rise".

You are the most prolific poster I have ever seen with over a thousand posts in a month and a half. By my calcalulation, you have about a twenty post a day average. As far as being an asshole, I will have to take your word for that.

Lol...why do you call yourself Ft Niagara

Because it defended against the Canadians.

"I see I see" said the blind man. I dont always agree with M Dancer, but I dont think its fair to call him an asshole, nor does it make any point, Ft Niagara. You are from Buffalo, I think you said. Sabres have a good team this year. I dont know if you are a hockey fan, but I think they are doing pretty hot. I think they probably would have ousted Carolina last year if it wasnt for the fact that all their good defensemen were injured.

Re-reading this again I see that u were referring to M Dancer calling himself an asshole. My bad.

I did not call him an asshole, he calls himself an asshole. Why, ask him. I was just pointing out something I thought interesting, such as a 20 post a day average, and that he says FORMERLY called Morris Dancer, although he was never formerly Morris Dancer on this forum, and that he calls himself an asshole. I just have never seen it in any other forum.

Another one I found interesting is a Man of Action, Gentleman of Leasure. Kind of contradicting.

Jefferiah, in fact if you joined just this week, YOU have about a 20 post a day average also. And yes, the Sabres have been a great pleasure to the area, as opposed to the Bills. Hopefully, they can go all the way this time. I do not think it fair for a southern city to win the Stanley Cup like Dallas and Carolina.

No offense. I rooted for Dallas when they were against Buffalo. I cant remember why. Carbonneau was with them then I think. I am a HAbs fan. Always have been, and Carbonneau was one of my favourite players. I rooted for Buffalo against Carolina though. But I dont think its unfair that a southern team wins. But I think I understand the feeling. Anyone I have talked to online from Carolina is not even aware they had a pro team. Carolina and Nashville, are not Detroit or Montreal or NY. These are not hockey people. HOw dare they? lol

Buffalo got some revenge when the smoked the Flyers, and their coach Hitchcock got fired. The same coach who coached Dallas, I believe, during that series.

And then they got some revenge against Carolina by beating them 2x, and one by a shootout I believe.

During the last playoffs, when they got beat out I thought....hmmm I bet you next year they'll get the cup. I am not sure this will happen. But they are pretty damn fast. That Afinoganov is like lightning bolt at times. Growing up I hated Edmonton. Probably cuz so many people loved em back then, Lol. But I like watching their games too this year. I think they are both hard working teams. At the beginning of the 05-06 season I think most of the sports predictions said Buffalo wouldnt make it to the playoffs. They sure proved em wrong. They are a team that doesnt mess around. When the play turns around they are quick to hustle back. I am not saying they dont have skill either. But sometimes I watch teams play and I think to myself "man they could do better than this. especially at that salary" Not with Buffalo.

In the past, under previous ownership, they would spend the money, but got little for it. I think that the bankrupcy was a good thing because when Gallisano took over, money was an object. They have no stars (yet) and the money issue is (still) in balance.

I'm live about 45 Trudeau Units (kms) from NYC.

You must mean "earth units" -- everyone except the US uses metric. Metric simply makes more sense. I never could understand why America didn't go metric in the 70s when we did.

Britain still uses real distance measurements, though it uses Trudeau Units for temperature.

And can you imagine Robert Frost, the poet, writing "and klicks to go before I sleep"? Or even Canada's own Blue Rodeo singing, in "English Bay" (link to lyrics), instead of "though you're 1500 miles away I you howling at the moon", singing "though you're 2800 kilometers away I hear you howling at the moon".

lol. Thats a good point, JBG. Actually I always thought that line sounded kind of funny anyway....like a Paul Simon line or something.

Paul Simon and James Taylor were both often referred to as "folk poets" back during the 1960's and 1970's.

This is such a minor point I can't believe I am bothering to make it, but "y'all" is not an "American type [thing]". I mean, it isn't said by anyone but Americans, but it is only said by some Americans (i.e., those who live in the southeast corner of the US). You'd be really hard pressed to find anyone west of Texas or north of Kentucky who uses it.

Yes of course. Though I have come across tourists from the northwest states (Oregon and Washington) who said ya'all. One time this lady (from Oregon) asked me at a gas station 'Ya'all using the bathroom?' Nobody was with me so naturally I was thinking she whacked. She looked quite confused when I looked behind me. Maybe she was never taught the difference between singular and plural. But I've been told that's pretty common.

If some) Americans (everyone I’ve met so far) feel they have the right to joke around and say 'EH!' every time they meet a Canadian then we should have the same right to make fun of American sayings. It's only fair... eh?!

It’s just funny how some Americans are. Visiting with my bf’s family (who’s from Washington) his dad insists that I can’t be cold because “she’s from the great white north!” Hello, I’m only an hour and a half across the water. The weather is basically the same. In fact it’s usually a few degrees warmer where I live. Or when, at a party (good times!), his cousin, uncle and neighbor all crowded around me asking if I say ‘aboot’. And I’m like ‘no I say ABOUT. However we don’t lengthen it out it like ‘abouuuuuutt’ in Canada'

They all thought that was quite cute. Well eh…

Posted

The use of the eh, and the abouuut, I somehow do not think of as an accent, but a geographic marker. Canadian English, to me seems similar to midwest American. The drawl of the South or Boston or New York, all are very distinct, and difficult to mimic well. But the eh and the abouut, anyone with a midwest American accent could fake that. To me, the eh seems like OK, which when over used, draws attention.

Well first of all note I'm not talking in general terms.

I think many people forget how huge Canada is. We are the second largest country in the world yet they act like we are all the same. I've come across many Americas (of course many are different) that try to fake a stereotypical type Canadian accent while saying things like 'It's frigging cold innit, eh?' yet try to joke around with them and they lecture you on how different each part of America is (yet their country is smaller...odd). I find it quite hipocritial.

Ever heard a Nuffie accent? Now that's funny.

I always assumed that Canada was a different country from mine, they'd have their own language anyway.

Canadian english is closer to actual English english than American english is. But other than a few differences of spelling (colour not color!) and pronounication it's basically the same.

I find it funny how some Americans come here to visit (I live in one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of Canada. I see them enough to know) expecting things to be totally different and when they aren't really they seem disappointed. Or when they try to impress us poor Canadians. I've had conversations with tourists that what along the lines of:

'Excuse me, do you have so and so here in Canada?'

'Yes we do too. It's right over there'

'Ohh... I see. Well do you have blah blah blah?'

'Yes doesn't everyone?'

'Ummm...err I can't read this. It's in French. Here you read it!'

'I don't know French. Most people here don't. Flip the damn thing over'

Those questions sound pretty normal to me. Like if I am in someone's house I might ask where the washroom is? Or where is you garbage can so I can throw this out? The people in your situation sound like they are inquiring politely.

I always assumed that Canada uses a totally different language closer to Sanskrit or Swahili.
