Former finance minister Ralph Goodale is thinking about entering the race for the federal Liberal leadership after being asked by friends and party members.

The Regina MP said Friday he's now reconsidering his earlier decision not to seek the leadership.

“Out of respect for them, and they are people in the party that I respect very much, they've asked me to think it through again, so I'm doing that,” Mr. Goodale said.

“I don't know that I will come to any different conclusion, but I have agreed to at least give it some thought.”

He's got the backing of a lot who think he's the most trustworthy and honest of the bunch.

I think Ralph has the best potential of the bunch running so far, what do you think?

1. We should start a single thread on the Liberal Leadership. Then, when it becomes "too long", we should start another.

2. IMO, one must always view Canadian federal politics through a regional prism. In each region, this has specific meanings: Does Goodale speak French? How will Toronto perceive him? Does he respect provincial autonomy? Is he a Westerner? Will he ensure federal largesse? Can he speak for Canada?

For example, in another thread, Bob Rae is discussed as a possible federal Liberal leader. IMHO, Bob Rae is too 'Ontarian' to be electable in Canada. If his candidacy is being discussed, it indicates that the federal Liberal Party is seriously (if foolishly) looking for new leadership or that Bob Rae has a huge ego, is currently bored and wants to see his name in the news again.

----

With that said, the last French Presidential election was presented as a choice between a crook and a fascist. (IMO, such a choice is likely a harbinger of the apparent presentation of many future elections in western countries). IOW, I think the federal Liberals will choose as leader someone who is not considered to be a crook. Goodale is too connected to the income trust, insider info deal. Brison too.

[NDLR: Why IMO or IMHO? Everything I post here is my opinion.]

Ralph Goodale! You've got to be kidding me! He is the poster boy for corruption and what can happen when government officials are given too much power. Stephen Harper could and would wipe the floor with him. At least with Paul Martin there was always some reasonable doubt as to whether or not he was involved in the sponsorship scandal, but with Goodale; he took scandal to a whole new level. Egads! Has anyone got any gum?
