I recently stood beside a male with tattoos on his forehead.

HE was ugly anyway, right? Why shouldn't he be free to disfigure himself with facial graffiti ?

Herbie,

You raise a good question: what is the connection between skin tattoos and urban graffiti?

Analogous to walnuts and chinuts? 😆

Chinuts?

Some people are allergic to peanuts.

As I travel, graffiti (urban bombing) is typically male -and proof of a rich society.

Tattoos and wedding rings are powerful symbols, but they cater to different aspects of personal and social identity.

One student in my class has 101 tattoos, one to memorialize at pet, one to a sport they belong, one to rebel some societal inequities, one it is beautiful, all sounded like a valid reason to get a tattoo.

Why remove some as they are doing costly procedure, well it faded and maybe not aligned with the stars.  Maybe they have different values/taste now, people grow up.  How about maybe it is affecting their health - so your tax dollars at work to remove them.  Removing them also have side effects so they must have really good reason to remove them - hopefully they are not into bets to get or remove these tattoos, some people do this and then get some wild tattoos.

The wedding rings are commitment - two people, it a long culture thing.  Who knows why people take off the rings - I suggest if you go swimming better to have no jewelry.

RB, the best signals are numbers. Go figure.

Nope I am not doing the figuring as you suggest.  It will only make the folks seem illogical with their lots of tattoos.  Their tattoos have deep meaning related to sometimes trauma, sometimes happiness, and whatever come what may ...

We are some 8 billion on this planet. Everyone has a story. Move on.

Years ago, I read China To Me. A woman, Emily Hahn, wrote about rape in Hong Kong.

Of course, there's Vonnegut - a guy who lived through the Dresden bombing:

“That's one thing Earthlings might learn to do, if they tried hard enough: Ignore the awful times and concentrate on the good ones.”

Yes these tattoos have controversies and downsides.

Is it possible though that despite tattoos having been accepted, some folks still carry this disdain for tattoos - why we are still talking about this. Now this non-acceptance can lead to all kinds of judgements, and even though people wish to be rational about their biases and stigmas the fear is, it also lead to exclusions...

Disdain?

Some tattoos are a sign of identity. I recall the women (Berbers) in Algeria. This is a choice - like circumcision.
