I was asking about who runs the site you started this thread with

Isn't it obvious? Looks to me like Gerry himself is sole proprietor and sole contributor.

It is just me, or is the entire content of the site two pieces, one of which is only a few sentences?

The government should do something.

I have no problem with media bias so long as they admit it.

I find Fox's fair and balanced as repugnant as the CBC's claims that they are objective.

Just come clean.

One thing all networks need to do is remove the editorializing from their news rooms. News should be reported as is. If you want to have an op-ed show about current events, that's fine. Just keep the editorials out of the newsroom.

I get a kick out of the "rise in China" segments on CBC. As a leftist network that I am sure esposes Chinese communist values over free-market American ones, the CBC can't wait for China to rise in order to (they hope) stem the dominance of American culture on our values.

What CBC doesn't understand is that your average Canadian would rather watch "The Simpsons" than most Canadian shows. In fact, last year in the top 20 most watched shows, "Corner Gas" was the only Canadian scripted one there. (Source: http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/show...50411/20050411)

Somebody get the Liberal protectionist Opposition on this one right away...:rolleyes:

I think its ironic they use China, an admittedly communist country where the residents have as much as or more rights than us.

For example, they have property rights and we do not.

Completely agreed, yet American taxpayers don't have to fund the FoxNews. Canadian taxpayers have to fund CBCs objectivity....

I watch CBC for about 3-5 hours a week. And I think the likes of Don and Ron are their best commentators by far. Just about everything else they air isn't worth my time. I'd rather be here.

And, FoxNews is watched by a majority having gained more market share than the next four best cable news networks combined.

China is a horrible human rights violator, I hope your being sarcastic in your comparison with Canada.

Mostly. But I do consider it sad that even China can bestow property rights upon its citizens and a country that is considered to be so much more civilized cannot.

As someone who lives in Winnipeg, I read the Free Press almost everyday throughout the campaign. Without question, the paper has a decidedly left-wing slant. They really did try to favor the Liberals wherever they could,

Right. The same Free Press that called for a Tory majority?

The numbers on that site quote 42-3 op/ed pieces with 32 being the Sun. That means that the Free Press was at least 10-3 pro-Con op/eds.

The last 10 days of the campaign, the headlines were consistantly of the "Tory lead continues to shrink" variety.

As someone who lives in Winnipeg, I read the Free Press every day and to call it "decidedly left-wing" is hilarious. It does have one lefty out of about 10 columnists, so I guess acknowledging the left exists makes it left wing. It even recently had Charles Adler as regular columnist, an icon of the liberal media.

Oh good ol' Chucky.

I just don't get it, why the hell does it matter. All media has bias, I really don't get it?

I read the Free Press every day as well, and it has gone more and more Conservative lately. Thank god they've dumped Charles Adler, but they still have Tom Oleson, bringing the right wing agenda to the editorial board.

The Sun is a rag; it doesn't even attempt to be objective. Its more about sensationalism than reporting.

For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.

I think its nice to see the conservative point of view growing in newspapers. Its a very nice break from the Liberal apologist rags of yesteryear.

The only problem I see, again, is that we have an epidemic of editorializing making into news articles. Its one thing to have editorials in newspapers, but another entirely when news stories CONTAIN editorial comments. Separate the news from the commentary.

The other thing about it that bothers me is that the news outlets claiming to be the fair and objective ones are usually just the opposite. If you're going to write from one side of the political fence -- fine. Just be honest about it.

I've made this point before, but I just can't stress it enough.

Gerry,

Can you not acknowledge that the CBC is not at least left-wing? When you're centre-right like me, you can't even look left and find the CBC. At least they tried to be a little less extreme pro-left-wing parties in this election.

Let's hope the Conservative government makes the significant cut to the CBC sooner than later...

Chinese property 'rights' mean nothing. Poor chinese are getting screwed out of their land all of the time. Some are so pissed off they have started rioting and getting killed for their efforts.

You don't get it? I guess that explains why it doesn't matter to you.

Keep your eyes open. Maybe someday you'll "get it".

Some papers are left, some are right. If you know the bias then it really doesn't matter. The media in this country is balanced just fine.

Here, here. Any time someone claims to have found an unbaised news source what they really mean is they have found a news source that is biased exactly the way they like. The best we can hope for is a balanced news source that runs different pieces at different times that are biased in opposite ways.

Exactly. Even if you have to change channels to get these different view points. :P

Whats the big deal? Editorial staff obviously have bias, this is expected and happens in all papers...

I honestly don't see the deal.

Then I don't see the big deal with the CBC having a bias.

Truth is, the media must be made aware of, and accountable for, the influence they carry over the public.

They influence the public immensely.

This comes down to a public good vs freedom of expression debate.

My instinct is the same as yours, that the press should be able to write what they please, but having seen the influence they carry, and the fact that the media is by nature going to carry a right leaning bias because media are corporate identities, I really don't know what is best.

What do you think?

"Growing"? It's completely taken over.

Between CanWest and Sun Media there's not many papers left.

I think the point of the topic is that Winnipeg is dominated by rightwing media, and the agenda this election was to elect Stephen Harper. Wouldn't it be nice if Harper could have been elected without the media in his pocket?

This is exactly what we need cut and dried papers taking diametrically opposed views. One conservative and one liberal. Then you will know where each stands and which paper to buy.

Good for the Winnipeg paper for being so one sided makes it easy for us poor cotton pickin' common folk to pick a side for us. Thanks ya'll.
