h4rp0r Posted January 29, 2006 Report Posted January 29, 2006 Could shows such as the Rick Mercer Report have had an influence on the outcome of the elections? In the weeks leading up to the election, many skits pointed out the bumbling antics of the Paul Martin campaign, and while staying critical of Steven Harper, Mercer still hammered home some sharp observations about the seemingly inept approaches of the Liberal party. I would be curious to find out just to what extent various medias, satires, and comedic approaches influence the average canadian voter... any thoughts? http://www.thiefofafraid.ca/h4rp0r/ Quote

Too pro-Conservative? Uh huh... If anyone takes him seriously anyways I really have no sympathy. Quote RealRisk.ca - (Latest Post: Prosecutors have no "Skin in the Game") --
hellnback Posted January 29, 2006 Report Posted January 29, 2006 any thoughts?http://www.thiefofafraid.ca/h4rp0r/ Most people have little or no idea of actuality regarding political machinations and simply follow the (seeming) media lead like a bunch of brainless sheep. Quote

h4rp0r Posted January 29, 2006 Author Report Posted January 29, 2006 I'm not attempting to suggest that Rick Mercer is too "Pro-Conservative", or that he should be taken seriously. Considering his program is on the air, the number of viewers must be significant, no matter their opinion or political stance, and therefore Mercer is being heard by what is most likely a large audience. My interest is based more in the potential for subconcious/subtle influence as a result of repeated media exposure to a particular strain of political humour... not which side of the fence any one individual sits on. Thought 2: I doubt Rick Mercer and similar had much influence on the outcome. While M3rc0r may have had some barbs for the Liberals, he's never really let up on H4rp0r (the "Future Conservative Cabinet" being particularly notable.) Thought 3: if Rick Mercer really was taken seriously, Stockwell Day would probably have been dealt with by peasants with pitchforks and torches by now. Ralph Klein would probably be living in a ditch, drinking Lysol to dull his bitterness. Thought 4: Mercer finding humour in the Liberals' ineptitude really just proves that he can still recognize humour. Let's face it, the Liberals are funny, funny people. -k1mm0r {"h4rp0r knows the hum0ns yearn for information. your curiousity knows no bounds..." great cartoons, dude } Quote (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Friendly forum facilitator! ┬──┬◡ノ(° -°ノ)

Well if people actually take people like Mercer seriously, and use these satirical shows as a tool in knowing who to vote for, its a good indiction we should start limiting the franchise in Canada.
