Churchill was right at the time. British India consisted of what is now India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Myanmar(Burma). All of them composed of hundreds of different states, principalities and the remnants of the Mogul Empire.

If any of them had been a single entity, the Brits would have never been able to control the region.

In 1901, the population of the Raj was 294 million of which 170,000 were European. Modi's India does not allow people to choose any more than the Raj.

At least the Brits respected the differences in religions.
