Almost 50% of Americans Believe the U.S. Is Winning The War on Terror.

30% of Democrats agree as well.

It is good to see Americans optimistic, regardless of how one feels about W.

Wel, they should hope thei rwinning. Because it doesn't look like they are ready for another attack.

Time, money and ever-present terror threats have done little to close gaping holes in the nation's security system, the former Sept. 11 Commission said Monday in accusing the government of failing to protect against another attack.

The panel cited disjointed airplane passenger screening methods, pork-barrel security funding and other problems in saying the Bush administration and Congress had not moved quickly enough to enact the majority of its recommendations of July 2004.

Agreed BD that is shameful.

Do you guys think that if the CPC wins that Canada will join in with the Americans in Iraq?

Not a chance. We've nothing to offer. As well, most Canadians would oppose such a course of action.

Again, agreed.

There seems to be this perception that "Terror" is an entity, like a person or a country, and so can be beaten into submission.

It is no such thing. It is (by definition in this context) action taken to invoke fear in a large community.

As long as there are people with a serious axe to grind, we will have terrorism.

We have had it for millenia in various forms.

It will carry on.

It may slow down for a while, but eventually, some other disgruntled group of radical-whatevers will come forth and take more lives senselessly.

Now granted, there have been fewer attacks against major western centers in the past few months, but that's simply a lull between storms. Don't forget, the London bombings were less than 6 months ago. Others have occured in poorer countries, and consequently have been less-well reported.

The USA/Britain coalition may (stress on "may") be winning the war against this particular group of terror advocates and/or extremists, but to say they are winning a war on "terror" is a bit like saying we've won the war on the common cold simply because we didn't see anyone sneeze today.

I would hope so. The Department of Foreign Affair’s new International Policy Statement (IPS) reads “Canada will focus on making a distinctive contribution to help build a more secure world, in particular with regard to failed and fragile states.”

While 12 years of Liberal rule has decimated our military, we should at least offer some support.

I hope the world will forgive the greed of our Liberal politicians (Chretien's son-in-law's father is the biggest shareholder in France's TotalFinaElf oil company...which had huge contracts with Saddam's Iraq, and of course, Saddam invested $1 million in one of PMPM's companies) who took Saddam's blood money from the long suffering Iraqi people.

Also from the article BlackDog cited.......

The five F's were for:

Tell us!!! Tell us!!!

Failing to provide a radio system to allow first responders from different agencies communicate with each other during emergencies.

Yeah, but that might use up some of the money earmarked for ad campaigns telling people how great this war is and how great Bush is for starting it.

Distributing federal homeland security funding to states on a "pork-barrel" basis instead of risk.

Well, gotta feed all those other poor starving millionaire politicians who are "behind" the war effort, even if they're 15,000 miles behind it.

Failing to consolidate names of suspicious airline travelers on a single terror watch screening list.

Well, that would divert money, too, money that is urgently needed by Haliburton.

Besides, if there actually IS another attack, it would really show the country that Bush is right about the US being constantly threatened.

Hindering congressional oversight by retaining intelligence budget information as classified materials.

Well, if congress REALLY knows what's going on, they might not support the war effort.

Come to think of it, if they REALLY knew the REAL status of Saddam's WMD collection (none to speak of), they probably never would have approved the war in the first place.

Damn. Gotta keep them in the dark.

Failing to engage in an alliance to develop international standards for the treatment and prosecution of detained terror suspects.

Well now, we can't have a standardized agreement for the treatment of prisoners, because then we'd have to live up to it.

But on the up side, we DO have all those nifty new color-coded terror-alert announcements to keep the peons frightened into line whenever it might look like they're getting a bit uppity.

"More protesters, Mr. President"

"Better call an orange-alert, Karl"
