All this talk about separation from Quebec and from the west recently, do you really think it will happen in our lifetime? Even if they have a unanimous vote, there's tons of things they have to go through to make it a reality. This talk has been going on for decades and has yet to happen....do you think it might? ever?

The more I think about this issue, the more I'm drawn to the option of simply going on 'strike' as a province, if that's an option at all. Why not just discontinue participation in tax and other money submission to Ottawa to bring about a negotiation and a possible power shuffle. Maybe everything will remain the same, maybe not.

Separation is not an option because there's no reason to.

The trouble with the legal profession is that 98% of its members give the rest a bad name.

I don't think Quebec will separate. Because there is so much downside to the issue.

Quebec receives more than it pays into confederation. Would Canada want to keep subsidizing an independent Quebec?

Never mind Quebec's provinicial debt, could it survive with the added burden of its fair share of the national debt? (Or any reasonable share for that matter?)

How much will Quebec have to pay for federal buildings, Canadian Forces installations?

My favourite quote was from a separatist who said that he thought the Quebec-Canada relationship after independence would be like getting a divorce but you still sleep with your ex every now and again.

Quebecois have to understand. If Quebec decides to separate, you will not be able to f*ck the rest of Canada anymore!

I think it will happend one day and problably in our lifetime.

For alberta, if ever important people and politician start to consider separation, and work for it, then we never know what can happend, one thing is sure is that the western situation could be at risk. But i don't think its the case for now.

As for Quebec, its a strong possibility, there is no strong friendship or adapted federal and constitutionnal structure to favorize an united country. Let's face it, quebec is already independant on many thing. But 1 thing still unite us, the fear. Whenever quebec will have less debt and a stronger economy, if ever it happend in our lifetime. Whenever they feel they could do better as an independant country, then close to nothing could stop separation. Will it happend in the futur ? i don't know, a 3rd referendum is on the way for sure but as long as quebecker don't feel they can do better without canada, IMO the result will be simillar to 1995 with a few % up or down. However on the long term, its a strong possibility.

It ain't gonna happen. As that Calgary Sun columnist said:

"You don't trade in a Cadillac because it has a flat tire!"

Canada is one of, if not the, prime destinations, and many people from all over the planet would give their right arm to be able to live here.

Maybe if some of the peckerheads in Western Canada would learn a bit more French is about the only improvement we need.

Ahh, the Quebecois spirit of compromise. Gotta love it. ;)

If I were living in Alberta like both of my children, and my grand-children, what's to keep them in Canada? A federal government that believes Canada starts at the Ontario?Manitoba border, and ends at the Quebec/ New Brunswick border. Most of the Provinces need not exist since Ottawa ignores us anyway> As for elections, they are decided by Ontario, so the rest of us might as well not even vote.

We need a major shakeup in this country, and in order for all Canadian's to be equal, we need to have equal representation from each province and territory. The way it stands now Ontario holds more seats that all of Altantic Canada put together, and the same goes for the Western Provinces. We need equal representation in Parliament, an Equal and elected Senate, or abolish it, and we need to make the judiciary accountable to the people who pay their salaries, namely the people of Canada. On second thought maybe we should just abolish Parliament, The Senate, the Governor General and all of their provincial counterparts and just elect the judiciary. This would solve all of our problems with the present system, and it would make the judiciary accountable. After all Paul Martin has already stated that, as far as he's concerned the Supreme Court is the FINAL SAY in this country, so let's make them accountable for their decisions. It definitely will make them less pompous and arrogant.

Nobody needs to learn French because it is a dying language everywhere including in Quebec. Their own advisors have told them they need to put more emphesis on the English language since it is English that is the language of commerce worldwide, including in France.

You're dying too.

What do you have left 60-80 years? You'll be dead long before the French language will.

Does that mean we should give up on you?

Troll. Take it elsewhere. How does his age disprove his point AT ALL?

As for this topic, I would LOVE to stay Canadian... heck my Canadian roots go back to Canada's foundation, my ancestors were some of the first to settle the West as well. I love the Canada that was, my problem is not with that Canada. My problem is with the Canada that is, and unless we change some things (such as our political dictatorship system) I can't see myself singing the Canadian anthem ever again.

I am part of a country that thinks it is smarter than me, better than me, and that it deserves all my money. On top of that, the country takes away all the political voice I have, and at the same time expects me to sit down and take it or I am 'not Canadian'.

Screw that, me and my kind are the last Canadians, and those elitists that I speak about are nothing more than the new European monarchs. You think imperialism is no longer present? Look at what Ontario is doing to the rest of the provinces, especially Alberta.

The only thing more confusing than a blonde is a Liberal

I agree. However, power is power and Ontario won't give it up willingly. Why should they? We need to see what is more powerful, people or money and resources. We just need to cut them off for a while and if they don't come to the table to talk, screw them, we'll separate then.

At least we can say we tried. Separation is a last last resort and even then I'm not sure it's good.

Personally I'm getting tired of the whining from both provinces. If I was the P.M. the first thing I'd do would be to force both of them to have a referendum.

Simple yes or no question 50% plus one wins! Do you want to separate from Canada?

:P

Actually i would like to see alberta legislation that would put the secession question on every alberta provincial election ballot.

Gotta love the Liberal. Even in his trolling he shows how close-minded the Liberal Party of Canada is.

You should never assume that some idiot who picks a moniker with the word 'Liberal' in it is representative of all Liberal supporters.

To fly a plane, you need both a left wing and a right wing.

Man am I sick of all this petty poking. Every thread has it these days.....

And what will seperation accomplish? Quebec will get raped economically, and Alberta will continue on basically the same. The lives of the average Albertan will be more or less the same, except for a smidge more beaurocracy .

Why are you purposely defying the request of our moderator?

Quebec is so self deluded that I am afraid we will deal with their whining forever. Alberta is maybe another story. The big gripe there seems to be with the political imbalance. Personally, I say if they want proportional representation and a triple E senate then give it to them. The west still wouldn't have the votes to impose its will on the rest of Canada, even if it was entirely unified in its opinions (which it isn't). So really, if that type of democratic reform is what you need to make you happy, I am right behind it. Anyway, as an NDP'er I think PR would help my party too. 20% of the votes, 20% of the seats. Sounds good.
