A Norwegian parliamentarian has nominated Bob Geldof, the Live 8 organizer, for the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize.

I think Geldof is a suitable candidate, but what do you think of his nomination, and what do you think his chances are?

Geldof's efforts would have been better spent focusing on western complicity in African poverty via propping up regimes for their own interests. Until that problem is solved, there really is no way to move forward on the issue of international poverty.

That said, there have been far worse winners of the Peace Prize than Geldof, so its not absolutely horrible.

Geldof deserves better than being put in with likes of Mandela and Arafat. He's not too bright either.

The Nobel Peace Prize committee is a joke. The recent awards have more to do with political posturing and some bizarre 'affirmative action like' agenda than with the accomplishments of the recipients

Send more money but who gets it? Not the poor who need it the dictators end up with most of it!

Geldof is doing nothing but holding taxpayers hostage forcing us to dump our hard earned money into the black hole of the world. We've been throwing money at Africa for decades and what has it accomplished? Not a god damn thing. Start toppling dictators and oppressive regimes, then pour the money in to help rebuild. Throwing money at them hasn't worked for years and years and it sure as hell isn't going to all of a sudden start working tomorrow. Why should the money that I work hard to earn be taken from me by force and dumped into some pet project for a millionaire has-been?

You can't just say it is just those crazy rock stars like Bono, and Nobel Peace Prize Nominee Geldof, who are promoting giving more assistance to Africa to help them get out of poverty.

Now democratically elected British PM Tony Blair says he wants Canada and the other G8 countries to double their contribution of foreign aid to Africa, and that he is prepared to stand firm with his resolve on this issue.

You remember all those promises of money and aid after the tsunami? Most of it hasn't arrived. Most of it never will.

Uhm, he's shallow, self-righteous, and loves media attention. His concerts will accomplish nothing, and despite his terrible concern for Africa you can be sure he's not about to sell off his multi million dollar mansion, or any of his expensive cars.

Someone inform Tony Blair that British Parliament doesn't make rules for Canada. Now if he wants to send his concerns to the Queen and if she would like to - for the first time in history - force Canada to do it, then so be it. I can promise you those who want Canada to be a republic would be more vocal than ever at that point.

Tony Blair can take his firm stance and go home.

Quite right! That sort of control is reserved for the US congress.

I blame those who decided it would be a good idea to rely on the US military to defend us, while calling for a more distinct identity.

His heart's in the right place, but as mentioned earlier, directly giving corrupt governments hurts more than it helps.

I'd rather the award go to a front line worker, someone nobody hears too much about. Then lets point the media in their direction. The nobel organization has a chance to advance humanitarianism; Geldy won't do that as effectively as others

Your right when the Americans asked us to stop making the aero we should have just made it and sold it to whoever wanted to buy it, that would have both kept NASA from beating the USSR to the moon and would have kept engineers and a major technology company in Canada, certienly a sad day all around.

Yeah, because the race to the moon turned out to be so crucial.

Like France, we would have ended up selling the Arrow to Iraq and like countries. And then, when we accuse the US of being tyrant-supporting warmongering fascists, we could have had the thrilling frisson of what psychologists call "projection" just like Chirac must have.

What a sad, delicate flower Canada has become, that one idiot Prime Minister making one (admittedly gargantuan) mistake half a century ago ruined our technological prowess for all eternity.

IMR, I can uderstand Arafat but please to explain the issue with Mandela? (a little Don & Mike reference for anyone who knows the show... sorry) What is it that Mandela did to earn your condemnation?

Could be that he's an admitted and unapologetic former terrorist.

The current Nobel Peace Prize holder is a Kenyan woman most known for planting trees and promoting the belief that AIDS was invented in a lab by white-people to kill black-people, correct?

Well, why not give one to Geldoff. Sounds like he's qualified.

Ha! Agreed. It's almost like the Peace Prize is becoming a kind of code for who the worst kooks are. Jimmy Carter has one too. No comment.

What? Can you please provide a link or a book title where I can read more on this? I must admit I have never heard this about Mandela....

Terrorism Knowledge Base

This is a great website for information about terrorism from all over the world. The article I've linked to does not mention the murders of civilians and ANC members who opposed the terrorism strategy. It's unlikely Mandela would have participated in murder himself, but Winnie on the other hand...
