Seems like the only good news, the only hope, comes from outside the U.S. these days. Fear and loathing of George Bush, Inc. is driving other nations into each other's arms. As the U.S. continues its assault on democracy, other nations are picking up the torch.

Of course, most of Latin America is swinging sharply towards the left, but Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez is a real firebrandk. If an international poll was taken, George W. Bush would almost certainly rank as the most hated person in the world, while Chavez would likely rank as one of the most admire.

Go, Chavez!

You mean, like... Cuba?

I hardly think Chavez, noted for his warm relationship with Fidel Castro and his admiration for Cuba, is reacting to Bush's "assault on democrcy" as he clearly doesn't have much concern about Cuba's horrendous human rights record and its complete lack of democratic values.

Chavez is an idiot. But he's no different than many political demagogues before him, who, in seeking to unite people behind him and get them to forget his mistakes, try to create an "enemy", internal or external, upon which they can place all the blame.

It does his country no good at all to pick fights with the Americans, of course, but like others before him, he's interested in the welfare of himself, not that of his people.

BTW, looked in a Mirror lately?

As the U.S. continues its assault on democracy

Oh yes. Overthrowing the Talibunnies and Saddam, liberating 50 million people, and having both countries participate in elections is an "assault on democracy".
