I think they and the Persians fought one another to a standstill, the Muslims walked into mamy of the provinces they'd been fighting over, the Western Christians stabbed them in the back and the Turks proved to be better fighters. But both the western and eastern imperial armies were able to cover some pretty impressive ground when deployed so I am thinking that might not have been much of a factor. But I could be wrong.
