Fascist President ? FDR Got Four Terms

With all the fretful cries of racism, fascism, and bigotry leveled against Donald Trump, it is interesting to remind his detractors in the U.S. and abroad that one of America's greatest presidents embodied some of the very same "qualities":

The New Deal’s executor held many positions similar to those of one Donald J. Trump.

Imagine a U.S. president who is bombastic, egotistical, and just a little racist. He worries opening the borders will mean an influx of undesirables. He implements capricious executive orders, and seems more concerned with his own power than with the Constitution. He’s often called a fascist by people who know what the term means.

And many of the early presidents owned slaves. So what?

If any politician today said "lets make black people slaves again" they would rightly be considered racist, regardless of what past presidents did.

Societies change.... FDR may have had policies and views that would be frowned upon today. But, he was a product of the time. Its now the 21st century.... the world has changed, and policies that once seemed like a good idea a century ago are often seen as backwards today.

Donald Trump is a current product of American society and has the primary/caucus votes to prove it. The "world" reacted to FDR's policies (and Truman for that matter) in real time too, "frowning" on them.

Comparing the racism of a president from 1933-1945 to someone running for president in 2016 is hilariously blind to context. Hell, why not ask why Trump can't own slaves?

FDR's bigotry was secondary to the "fascist" policies for his nation's economy. So "fascism" must be good, especially for Democrats.

FDR's socialist and fascist policies are well documented, and comparisons to Trump are an inconvenient truth:

...But let’s not omit the other half of the story: Roosevelt also embraced economic fascism, especially in his efforts to get America out of the Great Depression.

The best example was FDR’s National Industrial Recovery Act, a fascist program that would have fit perfectly in Mussolini’s fascist Italy. Under the NIRA, federal officials organized private American businesses, industries, and corporations into giant cartels that established “codes of fair competition,” which set prices, wages, and production in their particular sectors, all enforced by federal force. More than 500 codes of “fair practice” were developed.

...To encourage compliance with the NIRA, FDR and Johnson adopted a symbol that could have come straight out of Mussolini’s playbook: the “Blue Eagle.” In what is undoubtedly one of the creepiest federal campaigns in U.S. history — one that would have made Mussolini proud, U.S. officials “encouraged” U.S. businessmen to post the Blue Eagle symbol in their storefront windows in a show of solidarity with the federal government. Any business that refused to do so was immediately denounced and ostracized for its lack of “patriotism.”

In 1935, thanks to justices who were still fighting to retain America’s founding constitutional principles, the U.S. Supreme Court declared FDR’s NIRA unconstitutional. They rightfully pointed out that such a scheme had no place in America’s constitutional order.

Ignoring FDR's policies and impact will not make the fascism go away. The U.S. Supreme Court most certainly took them "seriously".
