Big Guy Posted March 29, 2016 Report Posted March 29, 2016 Jean Lapierre, political commentator and former Liberal federal cabinet minister, was one of seven people killed Tuesday after a small plane crashed on the Îles-de-la-Madeleine in the Gulf of St. Lawrence in fog and freezing rain. http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/jean-lapierre-dead-plane-crash-%C3%AEles-de-la-madeleine-1.3510975 He, his wife, sister and two brothers were on their way to their fathers funeral. All were killed as well as the air crew. I have been following his career from the "rat pack" to The Bloc and eventually one of the funniest and informed political commentators on Canadian television. I will miss his commentary. BC_chick Posted March 31, 2016 Report Posted March 31, 2016 This story broke my heart badly. I can't even imagine how that mother feels losing her entire family like that together. I knew a couple who never fly on the same plane. I always thought it's kind of silly when they travel in cars together, but I suppose the chance of any of the passenger surviving a car crash and plane crash aren't the same. Very tragic. eyeball Posted March 31, 2016 Report Posted March 31, 2016 I'll think nothing of heading out to sea for days by myself despite the far greater likelihood of a disaster than when I'm on a plane. Despite the remote chance I'll be be in a crash it's the unforgiving nature of the chance that I can't shake. Tragic indeed when so much is left to chance and then lost all at once. I had similar feelings. Can you imagine waiting for the rest of your family to fly in to attend the death of your husband and then seeing them all killed in that crash. I'll await to hear the outcome of the investigation but it doesn't look good. The crew wasn't all that experienced, flying a fairly crappy plane, when all the other operators had shut down due to bad wx. Perhaps they should have postponed the funeral for a day. My heart goes out to that mother. Quote
SunnyWays Posted March 31, 2016 Report Posted March 31, 2016 I really liked Jean Lapierre. I'm originally from Montreal and admired his insight into Quebec politics and their dynamics with Federal politics. Very pleasing personality. I'll miss his "straight to the point", clear analysis. Although I've never met the man, the news felt like a personal loss. Good people can make you feel that way. One of my tennis buddies has a summer home about a mile from the crash site - his son trains by running up the hill where the plane crashed. Like much of distant rural Quebec - families are large and there's a distant sense of community - so this tragedy is magnified within a close-knit community. Quote
