ndpnic Posted November 23, 2004 Report Posted November 23, 2004 I am wondering why my smoke pack acknowleges that suicide is the 2nd biggest killer of Canadian citizens each year, but the government and society don't? It seems to me that there is something Fundamentally wrong in a country where more people off themselves then are murdered, or die of alcohol, or anything else other than tobacco!! Quote
caesar Posted November 24, 2004 Report Posted November 24, 2004 What kind of cigasrettes do you smoke. I never seen that on mine. Quote
ndpnic Posted November 24, 2004 Author Report Posted November 24, 2004 The death stats are on random packs of all brands. Health Canada stats 45,000 - Tobacco deaths 3,900 - Suicide deaths 2,900 - Car acciedent deaths 1,900 - Alcohol deaths 510 - Murder deaths Quote
August1991 Posted November 25, 2004 Report Posted November 25, 2004 Statistics Canada says that about 233,000 people died in Canada in 2003-4. The total on the cigarette package appears to be about 54,000. So, what did the other people die of? Quote

So, what did the other people die of? I don't know - various illnesses/accidental deaths maybe. Does that lessen the seriousness of the 3,9000 Canadians who choose to nd their own lives? Do you not see the problem with that many Canadians ending their own lives every year? That number is only going to continue to grew as the working poor and needy sectors continue to grow. Quote

ndpnic Posted December 5, 2004 Author Report Posted December 5, 2004 I would have to say by the lack of response to this topic, that most of my fellow Canadians are still sticking their heads in the sand!! Quote
Choke Posted December 5, 2004 Report Posted December 5, 2004 I think mabye the government should put more money towards psychological research, but I don't think there is any viable direct action that can be taken until the problem is better understood. Quote
Guest eureka Posted December 6, 2004 Report Posted December 6, 2004 There is also the gross exaggeration of the harm from cigarette smoking. Certainly smoking contributes to the deaths of, probably, that number - I should have thought it might be higher. But most of those are as much a victim of age as cigareetes. Tobacco may shorten many lives but not by enough to call it a major killer. Quote
