The NDP government in Sastatchewan reached a major achievement today - Saskatchewan is no longer a have not province.

Anyone else tired of the nonsense that that NDP governments don't know how to manage the economy.

Sask is still a have not province.

BBM, are you aware that Saskatchewan has a lot of oil? They have invested heavily in this industry for some time and are starting to show the payoffs. My brother from Ontario recently moved there and says the economy is very strong and cost of living is quite reasonable.

Politically this must be quite devastating for the Saskatchewan Party.

The Saskatchewan Party reminds me in some ways of the Democratic Party in the US. Close but no cigar.

There they were, figuring they had the next election all wrapped up, and along came Calvert's NDP Government, with their superb financial manouvering, producing these great budgets. Why fight success. Oh well, c'est la vie.

Well, needless to say, any brain-damaged monkey could run a growing economy and balanced budget with oil revenue to prop things up. After all, look at Klein.

kimmy, I will admit that I am as surprised as you are.

According to the Gov. of Sask. website:

Saskatchewan is the second-highest oil-producing and the third-highest natural gas-producing province.

I confess, I did not know that.

I still don't think they've acheived "have province" status though.

In an article dated today from the Saskatoon Star Phoenix, Sask is in a better financial shape right now because of:

sky-high oil prices and other strong natural resource prices have helped drive up revenues by $470 million. Changes to the federal equalization program have netted the province an additional $370 million and the new federal-provincial deal on health means an extra $66 million.

Note that equalization is included.

The reason why Sask. is doing so well is because the NDP put a lot of money into the oil industry when it was not very popular. Suspecting that you have oil and looking for it, getting it and selling it are very different things. Sask is doing quite well and it DOES have a lot to do with the Provincial NDP. Alberta had a booming oil industry before the PC's ever formed government, Sask did not have a booming oil industry before the NDP. They are not the same thing at all. Give them SOME credit for a change.

Don't get me wrong, IF they have done, good on them.

I really didn't know they had an oil industry. I guess I'm a little guilty of stereotyping Sask. as mainly an agriculture province. To anyone from Saskatchewan, I apologize.

Here is another weird one for ya NC. Last I heard (couple of years ago), they exported more fish than any other province in the country because of fish farming (and fishery closures of course). Now I never associated fish with Saskatchewan.

Land in Sask is really, really cheap and the economy is starting to generate more steam. It is nice to see because a lot of these folks suffered from poor economic conditions for decades.

The only things that Sask have are oil and weath. They will never become the next Ontario.

Nobody wants to be Ontario BBM. :D

Just kidding. With the established indutry in Ontario, the only province that can come close is Alberta, which if I'm right is gone beyond Ontario already.

If Ontario had oil, we would be the ultimate province. You can have oil and don't be economically prosperous. Sask is proof of that.

Well, there goes another stereotypical misconception of mine about Saskatchewan. I thought it was flat and that's it.

Thanks for that info caesar.

There are ski hills in the East, but they suck. The best ones are in the west, like Fernie, and Whistler/Blackcomb.

I was born and partly raised in Ontario and I know ski hills there suck. But, when you mean "east", do you mean Ontario and Quebec or the east because I mean the east?

I have never skiid but, I understand that there are some fine ski hills in Quebc. I have heard that the new one in Cornerbrook is pretty good.

anyhow, to bring the thread back where it belongs: congratulation Saskatchewan on your new developed wealth; keep up the good work. We can have a compassionate government and still stay in the black. Wake up the rest of the provinces who cannot accomplish this.
