Local News Truck Driver Honoured as Hero

November 12, 2004 - 7:28 am

By: Gary Barnes / Province

He was in the right place at the right time. Abbotsford truck driver Phil Tarrant has been given the Canadian Truck Hero Award from Bridgestone-Firestone. Back in April he was behind a car on Highway 7 between Mission and Maple Ridge -when it flipped upside-down into a water-filled ditch. Tarrant used the crane on his truck to lift the car out of the water- probably saving the driver's life.

Truck drivers are well known for helping others when they are in an accident. More than I can say for many car drivers. People driving cars need to learn to give large truck more room. Don't cut in front of them and then slow down; they cannot stop as quickly as a car. All drivers need to use a little common sense.

That is a diversion from the issue we are talking about. No one said truck drivers were bad people.

The issue is that the trucks today are too big for the roads and the small cars that drive on them.

Well quit buying those little death traps or take a bus. The trucks are the same as before. I wouldn't buy one of those small economy death traps.

drivers are not paid properly, or enough, so they work excessive hours, and when one is overly tired is when a lot of accidents happen. Just because that is the system, does not necessarily mean it is a good system.[

No of course you are not insinuating that the accident must be the driver's fault

Don't be absurd.

The trucks are double the size they were in the past.

I don't think any size car would have saved the people that were killed in West Vancouver.

As well as banning big rigs, let's also ban all Hondas......

....And only allow old people to drive late at night.

I also blame the federal NDP for this accident, since they have never formed a government and banned all Honda's and old people from driving on slick roads...

Couple of interesting twists to this story - police are looking into whether speeding was a factor, and also that the logs may have been stolen.

Where did you get the stolen logs tidbit? Of course the police are checking out any vehicles involved for speeding and many other things. Nothing unusual or of great inerest until the police determine the cause. Why speculate and start rumours. I find it very irresponsible. You are such a drama queen.

Hmmmmmmmm, so you want the rest of the trucking industry to suffer because some idiot/thief may have killed some innocent people while comitting a crime? If you want to eliviate some of the problems, start petitioning your local government to set up decent truck routes in the cities. Like I said before, spend a week in a truck driving for a living and then see if you still have the same attitude towards truckers and trucks. Just keep in mind, you have to take some classes for your air ticket. Then drivers training for your class one is highly recommended too. Then once you have spent a couple of thousand bucks on the courses, get a job driving a truck between Edmonton and Vancouver. If you still have the same attitude at the end of a couple of weeks I would be very surprised.

You give me too much credit for creativity. I just heard it on a TV News Flash. I suppose it will be on the 11 PM news.

We can disagree peacefully you know.

pff.... you are off on some weird tangent. My problem is with the size of the trucks compared to the size of cars on our busy roads, not the truck drivers who are just trying to earn a living under quite difficult circumstances. And apparently the driver has a clean driving record.

The government needs to regulate the situation, but don't expect the BC Campbell Liberals to do anything with their anything goes laissez-faire policy, until we have an absolute crisis on our hands.

After seeing that accident some people might think the crisis point has arrived.

Maple; We do have regulations. You are dramatizing an accident. First it was Mulroney's fault; now Campbells. While I do dislike both of those characters you are completely off base blaming them for an accident for which we do not know the cause of. Get a grip. Wait for the evidence. Stop raving with that vivid imagination. Most truck drivers do belong to unions; even independent contractors. They are regulated on how many hours they may drive by law. We had a bus driver found to be drinking and driving a bus the other day. Let's get them off the road too.

caesar....you are overdoing it, no one is attacking truck drivers. Sudden death is dramatic. Truck drivers have unions my ass. Maybe a few of them do, but that is what is one of the major problems in the trucking industry, the lack of unionization, which means lack of safety, both for the drivers and the car drivers who share the roads, etc.

And I think the bus driver was fired. ;)

The police say the source of the lumber is questionable. I don't know much about the logging industry but is there not supposed to be some identification on the logs?

They are also looking at the second vehicle which was following the one that was in the crash. I think it might have been taken off the road, and not allowed to continue to Pt Alberni, its destination.

That curve on the road is tricky and perhaps need to be rebuilt.

Who's stopping all these non union truck drivers from joining the teamsters? There is a big hall on Broadway close to the King's gate mall.........

And I think the bus driver was fired.

Ahh, so since this bus driver was a member of a union (CAW?), by him drinking and being part of a union he was never a hazard to the public?

Gee I wonder where what's his name, Transportation

Minister Falcon, the brilliant mastermind of the BC Campbell Liberals failed campaign in Surrey Panorama Ridge is in all this. Maybe he should come out of hiding, eh! But no, he will probably stay hidden until the West Vancouver councillors shame him into appearing.

How many accidents has there been at this location in the last three years? Quite a few I would hazzard a guess.

How many where on the Ski to sea/upper levels during the NDP's regin? And did the NDP have a plan, like Falcon and the current Liberal government do, to improve the hi-way on the North Shore?

Now that is constructive input. Who cares about some previous government?

The current BC Campbell Liberal government is our government and currently responsible, and they have had a massive majority for three years to deal with things like this. We don't need any more excuses from them as they gave handouts to the rich, at the expense of our schools, health care, roads, etc.

So if the truck driver is fired; it will be okay for trucks to travel the highways?????

Yes trucker do belong to unions. Teamsters, hear of them?? Independent owner operators usually must belong to a union; many companies will not hire non union labour.

You, obviously. You started this thread blaming Brian Mulroney; remember. anyhow this whole topic doesn't belong in federal or provincial politics. Not everything is political. Accidents happen.

Posted

caesar....why are you twisting things around?

Someone was complaining about a bus driver being drunk and I believe I heard on the radio that he/she had been fired. Someone was creating a safety hazzard for others, both passengers and other drivers who share the road, and they were removed from their position to eliminate the safety hazzard.

What a joke

Why are you blaming Brain Mulroney for this crash then?

Someone was creating a safety hazzard for others, both passengers and other drivers who share the road, and they were removed from their position to eliminate the safety hazzard.

After how you alluded to the fact that Union workers are safer.............So let me get this straight, If I'm a union worker, i can drink a 40ozer of Jack Daniels then jump in my pick-up and not be a safety hazard?

The point is: in every occupation; accidents can happen for various reasons; irresponsibility of company or employee; If this driver of the truck is found to have committed some greivious act; he too would probably face being fired (which would be the least of his problems) His only hope of not being fired would be if he were protected by his union. We don't cry out for buses to be removed because many drive unsafely; why would we declare that trucks should not be on the roads. Many roads trucks are restricted from using for safety reasons.

I have rode on buses and encountered them driving; they are very aggressive now and do not hesitate going through red lights. Just honk their horns in hopes that pedistrian does not step out on walk signal.

caesar........cut the nonsense of maligning bus drivers. We are talking here about a truck driver whose load killed two people and injured others. Stay on topic.
