Harper may not be appointing senators but he did appoint another judge to the Supreme Court. Russell Brown is the newly appointed judge and by the following article he may stir things up in the Court and could be another bad apointment for Harper, only time will tell. http://ottawacitizen.com/news/national/the-gargoyle-new-supreme-court-appointee-blogged-on-khadr-called-trudeau-unspeakably-awful-hoped-for-harper-majority

So please explain why this pick is worse than Arbella who was a well known SJW before she was appointed. I suspect the only problem is his political bias is not the "correct" bias. Hell, the chief justice has expressed her lefty political opinions in the media while sitting as a SCC judge and none of the usual suspects complained. Edited by TimG

He does seem to address the qualities to make him a good Harper supporter. Hopefully the CJC will step in.

And do what? Just because someone had made his political views known before he was named to the bench that does not suggest he or she cannot be impartial.

The only thing you guys have on him is he's conservative. Tough noogies.

Oh well, there may be some room for hope. After all, most of the SC judges who rule against Harper, were appointed by him.

Judges in Canada, especially on the SCC, have been known for making judgements based on the law rather than partisan lines. I doubt there's anything to be concerned about.

It's Judge Toews that may be the exception, if he ever made it to the SCC... with Harper losing this fall, that will become a non-existant issue.

You sound very sure of something that is far from assured.

Harper will get a minority at best....

Toews is also of questionable character... with the cheating and the court ordered wages withheld because he owed money...

That is one possibility. There are several possibilities ranging from an NDP majority to a Conservative one.

The Cons have no respect for the SCC.

This undemocratic conservative government has no respect for the Supreme Court which is the vanguard of democracy and constitution in fact they have shown again and again their contempt for SCC by constantly trying to undermine its rulings.

The prostitution laws is a good example that SCC ruled in 2013 that the existing laws by making some aspects of it illegal would endanger the citizens (sex workers) and struck them down but the Cons responded with bill C36 which now makes every aspect of that illegal and significantly endangers citizens even more than before and though the new laws are very likely unconstitutional but the Cons headed by Peter MacKay manipulated and pushed it through the parliament in an undemocratic manner abusing their majority (and they got their majority seats by 25% of eligible voters only). Their reason for this of course was not out of care for the sex workers but rather to undermine Supreme Court of Canada but also to appeal to their based religious support to give them another fake majority to rule over the remaining 75% of population. Democracy at work.
