I read a bit about this on the BBC site, and I have to say its fascinating on several levels. A 19 year old college sophomore founded a company to change how blood is tested, developing software and chemical systems which allow for hundreds of tests on a drop of blood, all far faster and cheaper than is presently done. I have to say personally this would be great. Instead of multiple vials being taken at a diagnostics center you can go into a pharmacy, get a pinprick to your finger, and be emailed the results 24 hrs later.

In the process of all this she's become a multi-billionaire at 30, and her story reads like that of a prodigy, like Steve Jobs, who she seems to model herself after, including the intensity and the building of a private company which completely changes the landscape from nothing which is now valued at $9 billion.

It's always nice to hear about people who see a need/problem and then have the guts/tenacity to solve the problem and facilitate the change. Good for Elizabeth Holmes.

We always talk about the ability to problem solve, but I think the ability to identify problems is far more rare. Like the professor Channing Robertson said “I kind of kicked myself. I’d consulted in this area for 30 years, but I’d never said, here we make all these gizmos that measure, and all these systems that deliver, but I never brought the two together.”

Actually, given that only in the last year has she been giving interviews and doing promotion type work there is some speculation that the company might go public in the near future. It would likely result in a flood of money which they could use for much faster expansion.
