Select few 'can identify liars'

CSIS, RCMP, Police, Security Officers, and many of us think we can tell who is lying and who is not lying. As this research points out, it is all a croc.

Hardly anybody can tell if someone is lying. No wonder so many innocent people end up in jail for crimes they didn't commit.

An education isn't how much you have committed to memory, or even how much you know. It's being able to differentiate between what you do know and what you don't.

Well, I guess the entire concept of law enforcement is out the window, then. Back to the drawing board.

And how many criminals are free now because they are good liars? How many people have lied at their parole board hearings, been released and then hurt or kill someone shortly after getting out of jail? Where are the protections for the victims of these crimes? No system is infalible, people will slip through the cracks. Who do we protect first? The general public or someone who is perceived to be lieing and the evidence may show this person may be involved? As time goes by, technology will exonerate a lot of the innocent will be released.

Well at least this gives additional reasons NOT to support capital punishment, eh! ;)

I never have supported capital punishment, I find the article interesting because it actually proves that there is such a thing as a human lie detector.

Still seems a bit far fetched and voodoo like for me.

"A human lie detector".

Give me good old-fashioned detective work anytime.

As far as I am concerned, it's the feeling that some people think that another person is lying that causes wrongful convictions and prosecutions.

I don't believe that we have a lot of innocent people serving time in Canada. I think our track record is much better than in the USA. We con't have the double jeopardy law in Canada; so we don't have as many guilty criminals laughing at the law.

I once took a course in which the students were trained in under 3 hours to be capable of telling (three times out of three) if other students were thinking of either a white rose or a red rose. I have no doubt that with modification and practice this technique could be transfered to improving one's statistical chances of lie detection.
