jacee Posted July 5, 2014 Report Posted July 5, 2014 Question: Do we have shared "Canadian standards of decency" ? Christie Blatchford: Government policy on refugee health care exposed as heartless and shameful court-gov-t-cuts-to-refugee-health-care-cruel-and-unusual-treatment The Federal Court has ruled against the governments cuts to refugee health care, saying Friday that the changes amount to cruel and unusual treatment and outrage Canadian standards of decency. The decision, handed down Friday, made particular note of how the cuts would impact children who have been brought to Canada by their parents. The 2012 modifications to the Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP) jeopardize the health, and indeed the very lives, of these innocent and vulnerable children in a manner that shocks the conscience and outrages Canadian standards of decency. The Court finds, therefore, that they violate section 12 of the Charter. Quote
On Guard for Thee Posted July 5, 2014 Report Posted July 5, 2014 Aside from section 12, what apparently hapens under IFHP is people are initially denied health care and then eventually end up in an ER and then the outcomes are worse and the costs much higher. Harper loses another one to the courts! Quote
WestCoastRunner Posted July 5, 2014 Report Posted July 5, 2014 This brings to my mind the huges number of children entering the U.S. south of their border. The U.S. has no choice but to allow these children through and process them as refugees. I wonder how Canada would have treated these kids under the conservatives? The numbers are overwhelming. On Guard for Thee Posted July 5, 2014 Report Posted July 5, 2014 Not to broaden the spectrum too far beyond the conversation at hand, but one of my long held beliefs is that eventually the imbalances that exist amongst world poulations will somehow have to right themselves. I say that after many years of travel and having had some very positive experiences in some very far flung places, amongst people who in my belief deserve to have all the opportunities that I have had. Quote
Shady Posted July 5, 2014 Report Posted July 5, 2014 Sorry, but the courts have no business weighing in on matters of budget and finance. We cannot afford to be the hospital for the world. It will bankrupt us. Quote

Well, exactly. The children seeking a better life and risking their own lives have no choice (in their minds). If we were to walk in their shoes, wouldn't we risk life and death to seek a life in another country. I know that I would take all these risks if I thought that I could escape the horrors and other life threatening circumstances. On Guard for Thee Posted July 5, 2014 Report Posted July 5, 2014 Sorry. They didn't weigh in on budget and finance, they weighed in on section 12. But since you bring up budget, as has been discussed, better to do preventative medicine than wait until it's an ER case where the budget rerally takes a shit kicking. Quote

Perhaps we can leave politics out of this one. I agree that I mentioned the conservatives above, but I should have left that comment out. This should be above politics. WestCoastRunner Posted July 5, 2014 Report Posted July 5, 2014 Perhaps we need to worry about our citizens, and let other countries worry about theirs. Right, of course. That is the solution. Perhaps these children will make their way north to Canada's border. Than what? Do we send them back on their way? Quote I love to see a young girl go out and grab the world by the lapels. Shady Posted July 5, 2014 Report Posted July 5, 2014 Perhaps we can leave politics out of this one. I agree that I mentioned the conservatives above, but I should have left that comment out. This should be above politics. I'm worried more about fiscal issues rather than political issues. As great a feeling as it would be to offer free everything to everyone in need in the world, it's simply not possible. And we need to approach these subjects with logic and reason, and most of all, an adult level of maturity, instead of child-like wishing and wanting. Quote

Shady Posted July 5, 2014 Report Posted July 5, 2014 What do we send them back to? Their country of origin. Quote
WestCoastRunner Posted July 5, 2014 Report Posted July 5, 2014 Their country of origin. easy answer, a cop out actually. Quote I love to see a young girl go out and grab the world by the lapels. Life's a bitch. You've got to go out and kick ass. - Maya Angelou
On Guard for Thee Posted July 5, 2014 Report Posted July 5, 2014 Perhaps we need to worry about our citizens, and let other countries worry about theirs. One of the places I worked for quite a time was in support of a fairly major oil company. Actually it was the biggest oil company on the planet who has made more money than any other company in the history of the planet. I know pretty much how much money they are taking out of that particular African country, and I know roughly how much they are leaving behind, to, what did you say? "worry about thiers" Quote
Shady Posted July 5, 2014 Report Posted July 5, 2014 easy answer, a cop out actually. Nope, not an easy answer or a cop out. It's quite logical. We can agree to disagree then. Quote

WestCoastRunner Posted July 5, 2014 Report Posted July 5, 2014 You need to consider why these kids are leaving their countries before you send them back on their way. They are leaving because of violence, being forced into joining gangs, terrorist organizations etc. among other reasons. You can't just say 'send them back to their country of origin' without analyzing why they are leaving and providing solutions. It is part of the bigger picture of refugees around the world Shady. Surely, you can see that. Quote I love to see a young girl go out and grab the world by the lapels. Life's a bitch. On Guard for Thee Posted July 5, 2014 Report Posted July 5, 2014 Um, ok, and what does that have to do with anything related to refugee health care by the Canadian federal government? Well it kinda works like this: if you go to another country and extract huge revenues from their resources, it's a bit unfair to then rush home with the money coming out your asshole and then pretend the people from the place you got the dough don't exist.
