monty16 Posted May 23, 2014 Report Posted May 23, 2014 It appears that this thing is nearly wrapped up now and it's becoming pretty evident that Russia was never interested in expanding into the Ukraine. It also appears that the US/Nato has been stopped in it's tracks and has actually did more harm to their agenda than good. Russia was given the opportunity to let the people of the Crimea express their loyalty toward Russia. However, the US/Nato has scored some points over the whole thing which could have been their objective right from the start. Demonizing Russia (Putin) to the West for future plans of US/Nato expansion. In my own humble opinion, it's caused the division of sides for a new cold war on training wheels. Now the US is going to have to work on expanding it's own sphere of influence as is China/Russia with perhaps India. And Europe's interests may finally dictate that they don't side with the US, however it's not going to be decided for a decade or two to come. Oil wealth will be a big factor and the US most likely won't be able to meet even it's own domestic demands, never mind enticing any other countries. Quote
Argus Posted May 23, 2014 Report Posted May 23, 2014 (edited) I'll take Quebec as an example where there wasn't enough choice to separate voiced by the people. Had it been anything near the solidarity shown by the people of the Crimea then it would have undoubtedly happened. So you're saying the PQ should have offered a referendum question which did not offer up a choice of remaining with Canada, and then beat up, shot or locked up anyone who complained about it, or that the only people counting the ballots were PQ members? Have I got that right? Your idea of 'the will of the people' seems startlingly similar to Stalin's. Then again, you are a fan of Putin... No, you don't even have it close to right and I don't think you even tried. What I said and what should have been clear to even you is that the people of Quebec didn't demonstrate that they were heavily in favour of separation. And if they did show that then I don't think Canada would have sent in the troops to stop them from separating. If you choose to continue to take my words and massacre them to suit your own agenda then I won't even bother to correct you in the future. You are wearing on my patience! You can also be forewarned, if you continue to try to equate me to Stalin then I will put it to the moderators with the suggest that you are not able to communicate without resorting to personal attacks. You can decide whether or not that's what it is for now. Quote
-TSS- Posted May 24, 2014 Report Posted May 24, 2014 The inevitable loss of the independence-vote will leave the SNP in an interesting situation; their very central tenet will have been defeated but yet they wil continue to be the most popular party in Scotland. Quote

iolo Posted June 2, 2014 Report Posted June 2, 2014 When people have been thoroughly brainwashed over centuries they take time to get back to self-respect, and can be easily muddled by propaganda. In the end, though, people prefer not to be bossed, mocked and bullied. My own people have been colonialized for much longer than the Scots, and at one time I gave up on them, but (sorry if I get the quotation wrong) eppur si'l muove. Quote
-TSS- Posted June 15, 2014 Report Posted June 15, 2014 If Scotland votes for independence they still wouldn't become independent until 2016 due to various reasons. That means that the Scots would still be able to vote in the UK-parliamentary elections next year. Of course when Scotland then becomes independent in 2016 obviously those Scottish MP's would withdraw from Westminster, which could turn the balance of power. Quote
