-TSS- Posted March 22, 2014 Report Posted March 22, 2014 About time too. Difficult to say what prompted the authorities to intervene but hopefully this sets a precedent and helps to put an end to barbaric practices based on superstitious claptrap: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2586074/Doctor-NHS-hospital-man-charged-carrying-female-genital-mutilation.html Btw, what is the situation in Canada regarding this subject? Guest Posted March 22, 2014 Report Posted March 22, 2014 That's a pretty stunning number, if true. 66000 cases and this is the first set of charges. I daresay it happens proportionally in Canada. I was going to post something I found with regard to the law here but for some reason I can't paste. If you Google "Canadian law on FGM" there is a Harvard link about three down that has a list of laws by country. Quote

We simply don't have that many doctors from the area of the world where these things are considered necessary, and the ones we do have worked hard to get the right to practice here. Not many want to risk it by doing something like this. I also think Canadian immigrants tend to be more acclimated (there are obvious exceptions) to western standards than those in the UK, and an individual who did this on any kind of regular basis would soon be reported to the authorities. Guest Posted March 23, 2014 Report Posted March 23, 2014 Maybe. But that 66000 number suggests that, in the UK at least, it either isn't reported when it happens, or if it is, the authorities are reluctant to act on the reports. Quote
Michael Hardner Posted March 23, 2014 Report Posted March 23, 2014 Bc - you have to read the study. The 66K number is a projection of girls at risk, not an estimate of actual cases. Quote Looks like someone has a new patronizing catch phrase ! Michael Hardner
Michael Hardner Posted March 23, 2014 Report Posted March 23, 2014 A regular failing of mine... You're not to blame. The mainstream media is guilty of corruption. I'm wrong, though - the 66K number is a mathematical projection of immigrants who experienced this in their home country, based on estimates of immigration from countries where it is practiced, from what I can tell. It is alarming in that it outlines a potential demand - roughly 22K at high risk. I was initially peeved at the quote, but I realized through my own mistake that it's easy to make errors. Still, this sentence isn't clear: "FGM criminalised in 1985 and is thought to have happened to 66,000 in UK" The original study is at the bottom of the page here: http://www.forwarduk.org.uk/key-issues/fgm/research Quote Looks like someone has a new patronizing catch phrase ! guyser Posted March 24, 2014 Report Posted March 24, 2014 You don't have a lot of Somalis? 44,000 officially 150,000 - unofficial number. Quote
