Really? So where is this support for Chinese hockey players? How about bobsledders or snow borders? You have to look at the support on a sport by sport basis. Almost all of China's resources go into summer Olympic events. Also, there is a lag between allocating more money and better results. If you can't say when China started supporting a given sport you can't say they spend more money than Canada. However, in any given sport if China spends money on it, they will eventually clobber the competition unless the sport has some special cultural significance (i.e. hockey). In the case of sports like hockey the broad public interest will create a much bigger pool of elite players to choose from.

And the US finished ahead of Canada in the medal count (28 vs 25).

Dont know about hockey but China spends plenty of money on the other team sport, curling.

They have four temas- men/women/senior/junior that don't have any jobs other than perfecting their curling. The govt pays major expense money so they can attend events around the world and play agasint the best. They have a very successful Canadian curler , Marcel Rocque, directing their comeptitive curling program full time.

. It is starting to show, both the mens and womens senior teams at world and Olympics are good, have had success and are not taken lightly by countries with long curling traditions.

With curling, Canada (and maybe the US) is still sending club champions to the Worlds and Olympics. All the other countries have dedicated national teams. For Canada, curling is like the pre Soviet Union hockey days when we used to send the Allan cup champions and win gold.

Maybe we should reward our athletes like Russia does:

Russian medalists at the recently concluded Sochi Winter Olympics are being rewarded quite handsomely for their service to the Motherland. In addition to the $120,000 being handed out for each gold medal, the $76,000 being awarded for slivers and $52,000 given to bronze winners, now word has come out that each of Russia's medalists will be gifted a new Mercedes-Benz.

How is that for motivation!
