Boges Posted June 27, 2013 Report Posted June 27, 2013 And impeaching Clinton was a horrible affront to democracy too. I think most rational people believe the penalty for Ford's crime shouldn't have been immediate removal from office. Heck Mayor Hazel next door didn't get removed from office and evidence is that she gave a sweet deal to her son. Nixon did something criminal, Clinton did not. You can more compare Clinton's impeachment to Ford than you can Nixon's. Quote

Boges Posted June 27, 2013 Report Posted June 27, 2013 And Ford hasn't been removed from office. If he was by the courts, it wouldn't be undemocratic though. I think many people believe automatic removal from office for any violation of the conflict of interest act is quite undemocratic. That's why there's a move to amend the act. He wasn't being removed for raising the money, he was being removed for voting on council trying to force him to pay the money back. Which an appeal court ruled that they had no authority to do. So the law also has no real teeth to enforce anything. Quote
cybercoma Posted June 27, 2013 Report Posted June 27, 2013 He wasn't removed at all. That's my point. If the act is amended and he can't be removed, so be it. The act as it exists though was created democratically and is enforced by a judiciary that exists democratically and overseen by judges that are appointed by our democratic institutions. If he were removed by the act (which he wasn't), it would not have been undemocratic. Quote
