jbg Posted July 1, 2013 Report Posted July 1, 2013 Interesting info: Bolivia and Peru are experiencing major shortage of quinoa, since becoming so popular in the West. The price of quinoa has gone up seven times since 2000. This means what once used to be part of the everyday diet of many Bolivians and Peruvians, is now too expensive to get. Instead, they are being shipped to us. Food distribution is of course a problem, as is food waste, but the biggest problem we will be facing on our planet will be food and water shortage. That is of course if we continue moving forward the way we are. Maybe the quinoa farmers deserve more than dire poverty themselves? Will the steps anyone is proposing to fight "climate change" reduce a single temperature, by a single degree, at a single location? WWWTT Posted July 1, 2013 Report Posted July 1, 2013 People tend to get impatient right when they need to be seeing the bigger picture. Brazil is just starting to climb out of being a straight-up third world economy. As soon as there are a few green shoots, people want all of it right now. Are you sure about that? My father lived in Brazil for several years back in the early 1950's,and for decades it was considered the land of milk and honey!(side note,Brazil is the 5th largest country in the world and has a wide range of natural recources and a huge abundance of fresh water, maybe the largest for any single country!) But the people he knew that where murdered, and finding the body of a dead baby girl was far too much for him to want to stay there! Lots of class inequality there. It's good to see the people there standing up for a more fair distribution of wealth through the form of developing infrastructure! I wish the people there good luck! WWWTT Quote Maple Leaf Web is now worth $720.00! Down over $1,500 in less than one year! Total fail of the moderation on this site! That reminds me, never ask Greg to be a business partner! NEVER!
Bryan Posted July 1, 2013 Report Posted July 1, 2013 Are you sure about that? Brazil is signing big trade agreements they never had access to before. Their products and companies are showing up all over the globe. Import, export, and tourism agreements are being implemented, but the absolute benefits measurable at home are still a few years away. -TSS- Posted July 2, 2013 Report Posted July 2, 2013 Brazil would be just an ideal tourist-paradise but as long as it has the repuatation of being an extremely violent and dangerous society it is futile to hope for any boom in the tourist-trade. Quote
Bryan Posted July 2, 2013 Report Posted July 2, 2013 (edited) Brazil would be just an ideal tourist-paradise but as long as it has the repuatation of being an extremely violent and dangerous society it is futile to hope for any boom in the tourist-trade. Absolutely. The hotel/resort chains with heavy presence in Spain and the Caribbean would LOVE a chance to bring millions of visitors and billions of dollars a year there. That would bring so much money to the working class for construction, tour operators, restaurants, entertainment, etc, etc. That's not even counting the bankroll in tips that resort workers make either! It's too bad too. I really want to go to Brazil. I train Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and the school used to organize regular junkets for students to go train at the original Gracie Academy and such, but it's just prohibitively expensive now. They don't have the tourist infrastructure that these smaller places have. I can take the whole family to Cuba for 2 weeks at a 5 star all inclusive for less than the airfare alone to Brazil.
