g_bambino Posted May 1, 2013 Report Posted May 1, 2013 (edited) Maybe what is meant when talking about privacy needs to be determined. In the sense of what the government deems private and what the public deems private. Well, given that eyeball's proposal is to eliminate secrecy to the greatest extent possible by applying recording devices to people in government (though we're still not really sure who gets one and who doesn't), it would be undermining to the plan to allow the government individuals themselves to define what's private; that's essentially what's done now: Cabinet meetings are private, audiences between ministers and the governor general or Queen are private, meetings between the Chief of the Defence Staff and Commanders of the RCN, RCAF, and army are private, all because sensitive information is discussed therein. But, regardless, even if the public determined (how?) what's private, people could use those private areas to carry out business in secret. Privacy permits secrecy. eyeball Posted May 2, 2013 Report Posted May 2, 2013 It took a couple of years for fishermen and officials to figure out the regimen fishermen use. I never said it would be easy, just not impossible. In any case at least you're starting to mull it over and work through the issues. It seems what really needs to be recorded are meetings between private lobbyists and public officials - I'm not the only one to suggest these be televised. What I'd like to know is what the public officials you've listed are talking about secretly amongst themselves when catering to lobbyists they currently meet with in private. eyeball Posted May 3, 2013 Report Posted May 3, 2013 Brought to us by the same people who regret ever creating the Parliamentary Budget Officer. If not a proper step at least these point in the direction we need to look. Quote A government without public oversight is like a nuclear plant without lead shielding.
kimmy Posted May 4, 2013 Author Report Posted May 4, 2013 Why should people record the police in the first place? Because stuff like this happens: Update: former RCMP officer and face-kicking enthusiast Geoff Mantler has been sentenced to 18 months probation for the assault in the above video. It goes without saying that without the above video, Mantler would have faced no consequences for the above assault, and would still be on active duty kicking other faces in the Kelowna area. -k Quote (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Friendly forum facilitator! ┬──┬◡ノ(° -°ノ)
