Dogs have to be bilingual?

Furthermore, Yahoo News and other reputable news sources picked up the story - before it came out that it was a spoof. Taking Yahoo News at face value is hardly akin to falling for the Onion. I think the parrot story confirms why some believed it as true. Strange things have happened. tongue.png

So you would believe "Aliens land in Saskatchewan" because it is on yahoo? Wow.... Maybe be a bit more critical when it comes to your thinking....

I believe Yahoo News wouldn't post such a news item. So wow.... if you do, and if you think believing Yahoo News is no different from believing The Onion, perhaps you should be a bit less cynical (I'm being nice here wink.png) when it comes to your thinking ....

You believed in bilingual dog laws and you are criticizing my take on the news? LOL

Well, it was Montreal we were talking about. ;)

At any rate,, believing a news article in a reputable news source has nothing to do with "my take" on it.

Ya know,,,,,I may have been inclined to believe it at first blush, but the part about '80 commands' when nobodies dog except Cesar's mutts and some travelling carny dog show does made me stop and go "nawwww,.."

It does after all say Quebec.

Montreal? Do you actually know anything at all about Montreal?

Like I said, try and think a bit more critically, be it from a reputable news source or Fox news....

Sure do. Been there, done that.

I was thinking critically. I was critically thinking that Montreal was trying to pass another goofy law. :)

Had this been in the Onion, I would have known it was a spoof - and I don't think it would have fooled "some seasoned news sites." Hopefully it doesn't give Montreal any ideas. tongue.png

I doubt it will give Montreal any ideas. Quebec maybe.

People really believed this story? Does this show how gullible people are? Does this show people have no critical thinking?

Maybe be a bit more critical when it comes to your thinking....

Seems critical thinking is a premium.

Seems some here are a bit upset that so many - including people who live there - believed Montreal could have such a stupid law. I just hope no one broke the law by swearing in frustration - in French. Any other language would be fine. tongue.png

Does it show that some of what does go on in Montreal is over the top?
AW makes a good point. The province of Quebec by history has had large pockets of English speaking areas interspersing the largely French region. In 1793 I believe the decision was made in the Quebec legislature to allow the use of both languages in government business. This largely reflected the reality on the ground.

The Eastern Townships were settled, originally, as an indistinguishable unit from what is now Vermont. In towns such as Derby Line, Vermont and Stanstead Quebec the streets interweave, strongly suggesting that they functioned as one town before the political border cut in. When the American Revolution happened the English speaking population of the Eastern Townships area swelled with people wanting to remain with the King or Queen. Montreal also developed as a mixed-language city.

Since the Quiet Revolution, and codified in law since 1974, the English-speaking minority has, for little reason, been virtually persecuted. This story satirizes the abuse.

And yet when the Canadians talk about something in America .....

Pretty hypocritical alright....

Ummmm...Did I say some Canadians don't like it that Americans believed Montreal could have such a stupid law? No, I most definitely did not. Try to focus less on me personally and spend more time focusing on what I actually say, and we can all waste less time on this type of nonsense. Furthermore, I have never had a problem with a Canadian's POV unless they are presuming to speak for Americans/America.

Your stereotyping of Québécois is hypocritical when you screech like a banshee when you perceive any American stereotyping.

Oh, so now I "screech like a banshee," do I? Dramatic much?

It's not based on a "stereotype" - Montreal does have some rather unique laws regarding the French and English language. Did you miss the part were many a Montrealais believed it? What do you think that was based on - a foreigner's stereotyping?

Like I said, try to focus less on me personally and focus more on what I say; for the record, I said nothing about Québécois - my comments have been strictly about Montréal, not Québec.

K, I've fallen for some good spoofs too but they all have something within the story that's so outrageous that disbelief sinks in and I end up googling it to find out if the article is real or not.

In this article that moment would have been the requirement to know 60 or 70 commands in each language. Seriously, how many dogs in everyday households know that many commands in one language?

Hard to believe it didn't click at that point and you still managed to think of it as some 'goofy law'.

First of all, I don't have dogs. I don't know how many commands they're taught in obedience school. Secondly, and I've repeated this several times now, a lot of people from Montreal believed it! Nice that I'm being held to higher standards than people who live in Montreal! That doesn't say anything about y'all at all. biggrin.png So. Hard to believe that people from Montreal believed it, eh? And harder still to believe that as y'all are going on about me, no one, not one of you, has had anything to say about people from Montreal believing it.

I don't know which is more amusing - the satire - or the reaction to my believing it.

STATE OF LANGUAGE POLITICS IN QUEBEC IS SO SAD, THIS “BILINGUAL DOG” STORY HAS PEOPLE GENUINELY UPSET.

I’ve never listened to CBC’s “This is That” and I don’t know if it’s funny or not, but I do know that they set off quite the hullabaloo this afternoon by posting a phony story about a Montreal city councillor suggesting a by-law to force dogs to be bilingual.

The thing that stresses me out about this whole thing is that PEOPLE BELIEVE IT!
And I don’t even think they’re crazy for believing it. What I do think is totally batshit crazy, however, is the fact that we live in such a state thanks to the Parti Quebecois, that people actually are inclined to think “well, that’s nuts, but really not that much of a stretch.”

Last but not least, there are Canadians in this thread saying it's not that unreasonable that people believed it, that such a law wouldn't be that surprising. But do keep going after the American for believing it. laugh.png

Once there was an expression, "banned in Boston" when Boston was under control of waspish elites called the "Boston Brahmins." One of those laws banned sex with a pigeon.

I have never found a pigeon that excited me particularly.

"'We obviously feel for the City of Montreal and city council who are probably getting some calls right now. We feel bad that that was an outcome of this, but it's a joke. A pretty funny one,' said This is That producer Chris Kelly.

City officials did acknowledge they were getting an abnormal amount of calls this morning."

This may be shocking to you, but there are really gullible people in Montreal too. And if they were to post this on the forum they would look equally foolish. So, no. You're not being held to a different standard. Anyone that thinks city workers would stop someone and test 70 commands in each language (140 commands in total) is really naive.

That's merely your opinion. :) Others are of the opinion that so many believed it because it's not that far-fetched.

Probably because it's not that unreasonable...
Quebec gave us Tommy Mulcair... This wouldn't have surprised me in the least. He also knows 80 percent french..
