Boges Posted November 28, 2012 Report Posted November 28, 2012 Today Sun media announced they're going behind a Paywall. The Star and Globe previously said they'd go behind a pay wall. You can say you'll find alternative forms of media to get your information, but if they all do it then you'll have a dearth of GOOD LOCAL AND PROFESSIONAL information available online unless you cough up some cash. Most TV networks don't provide the indepth investigative reporting Newspapers do and Websites like HuffPo are high on Opinion but low on actual reported News, I'd say. Quote

bleeding heart Posted November 28, 2012 Report Posted November 28, 2012 Bring back the pay toilet! (I kid....that was the single worst idea in history.) Eventually we came onside on Haiti, so we got another arrow in our quiver." --Bill Graham, Former Canadian Foreign Minister, 2007
Boges Posted November 28, 2012 Author Report Posted November 28, 2012 (edited) Bring back the pay toilet! (I kid....that was the single worst idea in history.) I was in London last month and walked into a Tube Station needing to take a piss. Couldn't get into the "toilet" unless I paid 50p. Edited November 28, 2012 by Boges Quote
guyser Posted November 28, 2012 Report Posted November 28, 2012 Today Sun media announced they're going behind a Paywall. Hmmm....maybe they want as many paying to read the news as they get watching the SNN news. What is $1 times 250 eyeballs per month? Wow, hope they can survive on the piddling viewership Quote

Wow, hope they can survive on the piddling viewership The Newspaper division doesn't have terrible readership, especially compared to that of the Globe and National Post in Toronto. Sun News is different but I haven't heard any recent news that they are in deep trouble The top Google search result for their ratings is from April. Quote
guyser Posted November 28, 2012 Report Posted November 28, 2012 The Newspaper division doesn't have terrible readership, especially compared to that of the Globe and National Post in Toronto. The Post no, but compared to the Globe they are getting killed. 1.9M to 900k is a huge gap. Surprised to see the post that far down, but then again, it has been falling Sun News is different but I haven't heard any recent news that they are in deep trouble The top Google search result for their ratings is from April. Trouble can be spelled out different ways. Do I think the money is tight? No, because PKP and Quebecor have lots of it. Also....production costs and values on SNN make cable access shows on knitting appealing.(Meaning SNN doesnt spend more than $10 a week on that stuff) Quote
Boges Posted November 28, 2012 Author Report Posted November 28, 2012 (edited) Don't know where you're getting your numbers from. This is from March. Not sure how different that is from now but can't be that much. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/report-on-business/newspaper-readership-holds-steady/article4096489/ The report showed the Globe and Mail’s weekday newspaper readership rose 5 per cent year-over-year to 992,000, including a 24-per-cent increase in Vancouver, and 3 per cent in Toronto. Saturday readership is up 3 per cent to 1,101,000. NADbank also showed a jump for traffic at globeandmail.com, increasing by 13 per cent to 1,494,000 average weekly readers. http://www.torontosun.com/2012/03/29/toronto-sun-readership-growing-study-shows Combined weekly print and online readership, as measured by the NADbank survey, was up 5.4% in 2011.More than 1.6 million readers already reach for the Sun every week. Meanwhile, readership growth at our free commuter sister publication, 24H, saw double-digit growth in the 2011 survey. Both citing the same studies. Edited November 28, 2012 by Boges Quote
guyser Posted November 28, 2012 Report Posted November 28, 2012 I merely googled it and saw wiki and used it. Some use the ABC (audit) and others use CCAB so not sure why #s are different. Quote

Argus Posted November 28, 2012 Report Posted November 28, 2012 So far the pay walls are merely a little annoying. The Citizen and Globe have them and you're allowed X number of stories before they kick in. So I read X stories, then delete the cookies for those newspapers and read X more stories.
