maplesyrup Posted September 2, 2004 Report Posted September 2, 2004 Corporate Media is destroying the democratic process by only offering news coverage of events that are supportive of corporate businesses. Any activities that challenge the business community and corporate profits are purposely dicredited. Protests don't get coverage any more they way they used to to. How else are alternative points of view going to be expressed? Conrad Black, Isez Asper, and others of their ilk have cut investigative journalism to the bone. All we get on the news now are one-sided biased pro-business points of view. No need to wonder why young people tune out, turn to drugs, or whatever. They are not stupid - they can see what is going on. We need a government who is going to seriously take on the task of breaking up these media conglomerates. These media empires are responsible for destroying our society's heath by poisoning our kids schools with junk food, etc. Anyone who voices opposition is given short shift, or dicredited in the media. We need a law in Canada that makes any advertiser pay for a consumer's group to come on after their ads to refute the bullshit that is constantly being forced on us. Cartman Posted September 2, 2004 Report Posted September 2, 2004 You have a point. It is kind of scary when these protests take place and elected leaders do not even acknowledge them. The UBC incident comes to mind. They had written permission to demonstrate in front of the leaders, only to be told at the last minute that this was rescinded by those without juristiction. There must be a place for people to efffectively express their discontent on government (other than here ). Quote You will respect my authoritah!!
maplesyrup Posted September 3, 2004 Author Report Posted September 3, 2004 This week 500,000 demonstrators marched against the police state and fascist tendencies of George Bush. 2,000 people in New York City this week marched on the mass media outlets such as CBS, CNN, etc. to protest their corporate orientated agenda. Where's the media coverage, eh? Quote An education isn't how much you have committed to memory, or even how much you know. If there's money to be made in broadcasting demos or interviewing participants, the corporations will do it.Maybe the problem is that the demonstrators are no longer newsworthy. Quote
Argus Posted September 3, 2004 Report Posted September 3, 2004 This week 500,000 demonstrators marched against the police state and fascist tendencies of George Bush. Police state? How do you expect anyone to take you seriously when you use terms like that? The major demonstrations have been well-covered, and the media generally supports most of their positions anyway. 2,000 people in New York City this week marched on the mass media outlets such as CBS, CNN, etc. to protest their corporate orientated agenda. Where's the media coverage, eh? Two thousand people is a miniscule group among the many large demonstrations taking place daily in NY. I'm not surprised it didn't get much coverage. maplesyrup Posted September 3, 2004 Author Report Posted September 3, 2004 Yes, Americans have to be vigilant that their society does not become a police state. At one point there were rumours of the elections beng cancelled by the right wing, due to the threat of terrorism. Why are police arresting 1000s of legitimate protesters in New York this week, eh?
