Albino Rhino beer violates human rights.

I once had someone complain to the HRC about me. I was on a forum that got sued, and I quoted the post containing his complaint. He then put out a second complaint to complain that I'd quoted his first complaint

Sadly, the HRC never went ahead with that particular charge.

There have been a few over the top Human Rights Tribunal complaints, but I'm not sure any of them can top this.

Albino Rhino beer a human rights violation

Aside form the incredible waste of time and resources, cases like this really don't do much to instill a sense of credibility with Human Rights Tribunals. I'm surprised they agreed to even entertain this complaint.

Restaurant drops 'albino' beer after name deemed offensive

A Vancouver woman who was born with albinism brought the case to the British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal, arguing that the branding was offensive -- and the tribunal agreed.

The B.C. – based restaurant issued a statement on Friday indicating that while it does not agree with the complaint, it will no longer use the word ‘albino’ as part of its marketing.

“It did not occur to us that the name would be associated with albinism, neither did it occur to us it would offend,” the restaurant said. “We do not believe the use of the word ‘albino’ reflects any intention to discriminate against persons with albinism. We have learned from participating in the human rights complaint process, however, that many persons with albinism are genuinely offended and feel that their dignity is negatively impacted by the use of the word ‘albino’ in our marketing.”

I wonder if people think it would be ok to call a beer ...

Epileptic lager

Ampute ale

Bipolar beer

etc

Get the point?

It seems the owners now understand that it did offend those who suffer from albinism.

Here's the next one. Obese people unite against discrimination and hatred!

Do you think the HRC will entertain complaints just from fat people, or do you think they will require them to have the ability to guide ships in and out of harbours too?

As an aside, this stuff is really, really good. Better than Albino ale.

To be fair, from the article: "In Africa, albinos have been targeted for ritualistic murder. Ero was born in Nigeria and her family fled to Canada when she was a teenager because of threats of persecution."

I guess sometimes we have to walk a mile in another's shoes to understand how they feel, but I do feel as if her complaint was genuine. Sometimes people are just totally, innocently unaware of the discomfort others might be feeling, so it is best if they speak up so something can be done about it. It makes no difference to the brewers if their beer and wings have "albino" in the name, but evidently it did make a big difference to this woman.

Understood about the African albinos, but the ale was referring to the Albino Rhinocerous.

You mean the White Rhinoceros? "White" and "albino" are two different things, and there were also "albino wings" on the menu.

Understood. I thought there was actually an Albino Rhinocerous. (Or that was another name for the White Rhino. I couldn't find the word Albino on the wiki page for it)

I need to read more National Geographics.
