Early Protestants, yes. However, there was a later shift towards fashion and "good taste" amongst the Calvinists as a sign of their predestination to grace. I'll give you that it was a fine balance between fashion/good-taste and showiness for lack of a better word.

I guess I'm just from that generation which feels men ought to be somewhat protective of women, not turn them into drug addicts and beat them up.

That is a very good way to be Argus - kudos. I have still in all my life never seen any these drugs except in pictures, and I don't think I have missed anything. Family is important in this way so good for you.

One thing that was consistent with stars and their drug habits is that they were surrounded by lots of people, so called friends and usually family is remove from their environment.

It is sad lost of talent.
