Boges Posted February 11, 2012 Report Posted February 11, 2012 (edited) The release of the 2011 census on Wednesday revealed that Canada's population has grown to just shy of 33.5 million people, news that may surprise NDP MP Rathika Sitsabaiesan.Speaking on human rights abuses in Sri Lanka at the Canadian Human Rights Voice (CHRV) conference last week, the MP for Scarborough-Rouge River declared that Canada is 9 million strong "standing together to fight for human rights." In the full version of the video, a member of the audience quickly corrects Sitsabaiesan and she reacts by saying she was thinking of "the people that came out and voted in the past election." Canadians cast approximately 14.8 million ballots during the 2011 federal vote. You can see the exchange in the video below starting at 3:30. If you google this girl's name you also find a story about how her headshot has her impressive cleavage photoshopped out. http://www.nodeju.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/Rathika-Sitsabaiesan.jpg I thought that was kinda interesting. Evening Star Posted February 12, 2012 Report Posted February 12, 2012 This is a depressingly stupid blunder, by the way, and certainly more noteworthy than MPs looking at a lyric sheet while singing the bilingual anthem. Quote

Male politicians are rarely if ever subjected to this kind of objectification, nor should they be either. You guys are being rather offensive. I apologize for casting any slur her way. That being said, I feel you are seizing on "objectification" as a diversion. For someone in her position to be so ignorant about basic facts about her country is inexcusable! If this is the baseline of MPs in her party then they are going to be in very serious trouble by the time of the next election! I remember when Stockwell Day was campaigning in Niagara Falls. Now Stockwell is not one of my heroes by a long shot but I had to sympathize with him when leftwing critics pilloried him for being mistaken about the direction of flow of the Niagara river. It was painted as a crime against the Universe! This of course is always par for the course from the left but when a lady like this MP of their persuasion makes such an incredible gaffe it is immediately defended by diversions such as yours! CC, she should resign in shame! Evening Star Posted February 12, 2012 Report Posted February 12, 2012 I think cybercoma's comments were a pretty reasonable and appropriate response to prior comments on this thread. They don't seem like a 'diversion' to me. Quote

You know what you're right, I totally whiffed on this thread. Still a funny story though. thanks for realizing where the riding actually sits... and changing your thread title. In any case... is it a, as you say, "funny story"? Unfortunately, the essence of Rathika Sitsabaiesan's overall message/intent has been lost - the exchange was captured on video with the related reference starting at ~2:55... if one so decides not to accept her 'recovery' on the number, you must at least accept she thinks pretty quickly on her feet. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_TKmwmaWuaw&feature=player_embedded#! Evening Star Posted February 13, 2012 Report Posted February 13, 2012 Yeah, tbf, speaking about major issues in front of a large group can be nerve-wracking. I made all kinds of blunders in front of the class in my first year of teaching. This was an embarrassing mistake but not more than that. I think it would make more sense to call this discussion a diversion from the content of her speech, to be honest. I defended Peter Kent the same way when he wouldn't answer about what ozone was fwiw. (I don't remember you calling for a resignation that time, Bill.) Quote
bud Posted February 13, 2012 Report Posted February 13, 2012 (edited) CC, she should resign in shame! you sure are a man of integrity bill. did you know that she was talking about 9 million canadian voters? *edit* someone posted the video. have a look. it starts from 2:55 the howling and screaming from people who are so consumed with team cheering is an interesting look at what's wrong with the political atmosphere. imagine if a conservative had made an error in a speech. would wild bill be writing a long paragraph asking them to 'resign in shame!' ? Male politicians are rarely if ever subjected to this kind of objectification, nor should they be either. You guys are being rather offensive. The physical appearance of male politicians is constantly pointed out, laughed at, insulted, etc. Have you never seen political cartoons? Gags about the appearance of people like Newt Gingrich or Karl Rove on comedy shows? Commenting on the physical appearance of politicians is par for the course, often in a manner intended to ridicule or offend. Females who choose to go into politics deserve no special treatment compared to their male counterparts. Their physical appearance will be savagely and offensively commented upon, just as it is for males. Being a politician in our society means exposing oneself to that kind of garbage. People who don't want to put up with it, male or female, have the free choice not to go into politics. Now, if you want to stand up for the plight of politicians in general, who are so often so savagely ripped apart by the media and the public, then feel free to do so. Quote

Evening Star Posted February 13, 2012 Report Posted February 13, 2012 Yeah, 9M isn't even the correct number of people who voted in the 2011 election. Quote

But I've got to admit that she had a nice recovery and segue into a rally for more voter participation. she's simply repeating numbers thrown out by the surrounding crowd... as a politician she deserves more scrutiny; saying that, how many Canadians (or politicians) know the recent elections eligible registered voter numbers?... know the number of actual voters?... know the related percentage? I know those numbers now, since I just looked them up - I probably knew them shortly after the election, but they didn't stick with me. If you (the royal you) didn't know, and were to pick a number out of the air, what would be your 'guess' on the number of registered voters and actual voters in the past election? As an earlier MLW member stated, she misspoke... and yes, she did make a nice recovery to highlight the abysmal voting participation levels. Quote

Offensive according to ? Offensive is goooood! P.C. is bad. Airhead's cleavage issue (*)(*) is air brushed. NDP never claimed to know population beyond Quebec's borders. She might have been thinking of how many running for Que... ooops! ....NDP's leadership? Although it's not quite that many. What comes to mind, with the gaffe, is that she typifies a politician's knowledge of Canada.. .an Americans that is. Quote
