I heard this somewhere, when he told some demonstrators, "Come on, get off your asses; get a job".

Can someone point me to a video where he said that? I think I heard that quote on "The Greatest Canadians", though I'm not sure. Thanks for your help.

Trudeau may also have said it . I know that a few prominent Americans have used the same phrase alto the usefulness of the statement to a bunch of lazy "remittance" men/women is sincerely in doubt.

Sounds like sound advise to me. Of course it would cut down on the hang time & drug party participation known as "occupy", and, once off the parent's allowance these junkies could develop into citizens instead of leeches.

My first job out of college was security guard.

You think because you have an education the world is going to come knocking? Nope. You need time and effort to work your way into the system -- unless, of course, you have connections.

Very true, but this also speaks to the misconception that education=jobs across the board.

True, so he will have to hope and keep trying. Most of his friends are out of work, but at least he's making some money...

I think the best job in this country is working for the Federalis. Nice easy job with good pay, and reliable. Once you're in there you're set for life man! But like you said you have to have connections to get in.

Yeah especially now because so many people just got laid off. That's why Trudeau is a jackass. He's got the best job, and he's telling other people with good education to go to work as a security gaurd, or make hamburgers...

Do you have a source for this?

Wait, what was the context for this quote? I haven't heard this before either.

The context of the quote was something Trudeau said back in the early '70's during the energy crisis and unemployment was rising...

It's true that Trudeau was a jackass...He held back his best jackassery for seperatists in Quebec!!!

The beatings will continue until morale improves!!!

Connections seem to work better than education too. Just look at some the people hired by the governments all have connections.

Not really, there are thousands and thousands of people currently getting laid off with the federal government.

If he actually said it, Pierre should have taken that advice himself and gotten a job.

His 'career' consisted of being a student for many years, pretending to work as a lawyer, a few months as a soldier until booted out, a few months as a civil servant, then a half assed appointment as a law professor until he entered a lifetime of politics.

He came from wealth and never broke a sweat earning a nickel in his life.

The government should do something.

half assed appointment as a law professor

What made it half-assed? Being a professor is a lot of work!

(That said, I do agree that it's pretty obnoxious to say this in a tough time, especially when your Dad's a millionaire. I'd want to read a bit more about what the context was, though: whether the protesters were being obnoxious in the first place, etc)

perhaps 6000 out of a workforce of about 280,000.

It is nothing, really, compared to what ordinary Candians are and have faced.

My comment is in relation to tilter, who expanded on the OP to include criticism of the "occupy" movement. Telling people to get a job is fine, and makes complete sense. Of course, when thousands have lost their jobs, and economy is crippled by thieves like in the Madoff scandal, life savings gone, banks gone, money for social services used to keep companies afloat, who then turn around and lay off thousands, it's kind of insensitive.

What makes it half assed is that he was a dilettante for the first 50 years of his life, he didn't need the money, only did it a few years likley out of boredom. He just played at life for the first half century or so. Very few of us have that kind of luxury.

Get a job indeed.

The government should do something.

What does it matter? I know he's dead. Some of my posts are intended to be metaphors directed at the poster I'm replying to.

If you worked for the federal government, you'd know exactly what I meant, and who I was actually talking to.

Yes exactly, and why the parallels to todays Occupy, "hey, get a job" are equally hypocritical coming from the haves, toward the have-nots.

Do you think that the people who provided us with the Occupy street theater are 'have nots'?

The government should do something.
