And the CBC is accountable for taxpayer's money. Is Quebecor?

I suspect you mean that Quebecor is not subject to the ATI law. As with all private companies it is not. But financial accountability is another matter. The Canada Media Fund from which Quebecor receives funds is a private/public partnership. As I see it, as such it would be accountable for any taxpayer money it receives to the government arm of the CMF by living up to the terms of whatever agreement was struck.

Is that Battle of the Blades or Little Mosque on the Prairies. Does going to a mayor's home display a shared national consciousness?

Absolutely! Especially the "mayor's home" thing, which is hilariously and so typically Canadian. So are on-the-street interviews, so you be wary when you walk to the store to get your milk Boges. You never know when Rick Mercer ambushes you with a deadly microphone and smile.

How about buying Cornation's Street, Jeoparty and Wheel of Fortune?

Coronation Street - a reminder of our British heritage; Jeopardy - Alex Trebek is Canadian; Wheel of Fortune - a discourse in our collective unconciousness toward the glittering empire to the south.

How can you not differentiate in your mind public money that's available to everyone. G4TV Canada, Food Network Canada, Nat Geo Canada, Slice, Global, CTV, City, MTV Canada, CBC, Quebecor etc.

And money that's only given to the CBC to fulfill a specific mandate.

Sure I can. The formerly named don't have the same mandate or accountability rules the CBC has. If SunTV were to change their mandate to mirror that of the CBC, then I might consider them as looking out for our best interests. But I'd only consider it for a moment because SunTV would do practically anything to sucker in more viewers. :D

I'll assume you're joking there.

I'll assume you're joking there.

Well, since you don't know what "shared national consciousness and identity" means, I'll assume that you don't know if I am joking or not.

Is English your second language? Kinda thought so. No worries. Go here: http://www.merriam-webster.com/

That's what I thought. The definition of Canadian culture is totally subjective, The CBC doesn't even try to speak to and for all Canadians.

Which is why I think having such a National Broadcaster that's supposed to exhibit Canadian culture is a waste of time and money.

Really? Is trying to speak to and for all Canadians not something that cannot be done subjectively?

How would you know? You have already admitted that you don't know what "shared national consciousness and identity" means, so I excuse me if I don't accept that you know what "Canadian culture" is.

You really think a country of 32 or so million people all have a shared national consciousness?

I'm sure there are plenty of people that hate most of what's on CBC so they clearly aren't speaking to the whole country.

I'll give them credit with having a show like Heartland though. I'm sure people South of Bloor hate that show.

BTW this thread has gone off the rails a bit. There are plenty of threads on this site that debate the usefulness of the CBC.

This thread is about that "Get the Facts" thing on their website which didn't have all the facts.

This is a follow up to a previous post of mine.

I searched Canadian Media Fund/Canada Media Fund for the source of its funding. Nowhere could I find how much money the taxpayer is contributing to that fund.

Well, it looks like I was searching for something that may not exist at all.

...the CMF and LPIF are funded primarily by cable and satellite companies like Videotron, not by the federal government. Quebecor points out that Videotron pays slightly more into the media fund than TVA takes out of it, which means Quebecor is subsidizing the CMF, not the other way around.

The above link goes into quite a bit of detail, offering a good look at the misinformation from both sides. A lot of that stuff I wasn't aware of, especially the ongoing fight between CBC/Radio Canada and Quebecor over the Quebec francophone market.
