U.S. soldiers apply for refugee status in Canada

Why should we allow these guys in, they applied to join the army. Imagine if between 1939-1941 Canadian's were leaving to the states because they did'nt want to get involved in the war in Europe. These guys are cowards and should be treated like cowards.

refugees are suppose to be people from countries like Cuba, China, Sudan, etc, not people from first world nations.

I suspect that these applications will go nowhere. When you accept refugees from a country, you are saying that the host country is engaged in atrocities. Canada will never say such a thing b/c it will enrage the US. They should have gone to France.

That's not entirely true. In Hinzman's case, his claim is based on the likliehood of persecution should he return (in his case, prosecution for desertion).

Of course, he orginally applied for concientous objector status withing the Army (and did everything by the book) only to have the Army "lose" his paperwork.

The soldier who refuses to fight

These guys are cowards and should be treated like cowards.

Bull. Hinzman and those lik ehim may be many things, but cowardly isn';t one of them. There's nothing cowardly about taking a stand for your beliefs, especially if it means giving up as much and risking as much as tehse guys have. I'll reserve accusations of cowardacie for those too afraid or too ignorant to question their leaders.

He volunteered to fight for his country, and then bolted. It is considered cowardice to try to run to Canada, and take advantage of our refugee system. Imagine in World War 2, if our soldiers started bolting to the states because they did'nt feel like fighting in world war 2.

A coward is a coward.

He joined the military, and knew what he was getting into. He's afraid of fighting in Iraq for his country, thats about it.

If he has such a strong stand for his beliefs, why is'nt he doing it in the US, rather than running up to Canada.

In 2002, Mr. Hinzman asked the army to declare him a conscientious objector because he had arrived at the religious conviction that killing and war in any guise are wrong. His request was rejected.

He's in the army, thats what armies do.

If he does'nt believe in fighting wars, than he should'nt have joined the army.

I won't go so far as to call this guy a coward as who knows? When the bullets started to fly he might have been a regular Sgt York but he is a deserter. The army is a cohesion of people all with one purpose; to do the bidding of the Governing power. Is he doing that by changing his mind and taking off? No.

Do is time like Caisus Clay did and move on with his life.

While I have no doubt that these men will be persecuted when they return to the US, they broke laws of their country and deserve it. I don't know or care if they're cowards or not, they had a legal obligation to fight for their country as soon as they signed up. They have to accept the decisions that their nation makes for them.

He'd rather not violate his personal beliefs by fighting a war he doesn't believe in.

Furthermore, he tried to play the game by the rules (as I already pointed out), but the Army messed with his C.O application.

Hinzman served three years in the Army prior to January. He had applied for conscientious objector status before his unit was sent to Afghanistan in 2002, but the Army told him it had lost his application.

His choices were go to jail, or go to war. He found a third option.

Also, let's not forget that the armed forces is, for many, an employer of last resort. The best (and for many, the only) chance to get an education and valuable work experience that doesn't necessarily involve blowing people's heads off.
