For true horror, watch pretty much anything by the fatuous auteur Lars Von Trier.

They all make me want to kill kill kill Lars very slowly.

Yes, I've heard of him, but have never seen his films.

Just yesterday I watched "Crank 2: High Voltage". I'm not sure how to describe it-- action, comedy, absurdly violent, theatre of the absurd, hilarious, offensive... ridiculous movie, anyway. But it had one scene, in which one of the villains forces his flunky to cut his own nipples off... which was shown in excruciating detail... both of them... for at least a minute... which was too much for me.
In 1929, Dali and Buñuel did far worse. They cut an egg with a razor. Watch at your peril.

How so ?

I find that people who hate Von Trier tend to hate it when they're challenged in the cinema. Is that you ?

Von Trier does, interestingly, make some people angry. The response is interesting.

I'm going to check out AntiChrist shortly, which evidently has generated visceral responses, both love and hate.

Michael Haneke's movies seem to hit people in the same way. Funny Games makes some people dislike him, personally; which might be part of the point, in that such movies are what academics would call an "interrogation" of film and audience participation.

Not at all, I go to about 75-100 movies per year at theatres, mostly the three local arthouse venues. I don't have much of a filter, I go to nearly anything but prefer the non-mainstream stuff generally.

I am not going to relive or again critique Dancer in the Dark extensively, I choose not to relive that particular horror. If I get asked to name the worst movie I have ever seen, it is at or near the top. It all begins at the beginning, where in the opening five minutes of credits(which are very long indeed)we see von Triers name over and over and over again. He is a man possessed with ego, which would not be so bad if he had anything interesting to say, anything at all. Lars managed to make me loathe Bjork too, a double dip.

Another director that is moving onto my won't-waste-two-more-hours-of-my-life list is sadly, David Lynch. He has lost the plot, a plot that von Trier never found.

The government should do something.

Really, it's near the top of my 'best' list.

There are good films with long, long sequences and shots. They take getting used to, but those are truly great experiences for the connaisseur of fine tastes ! Hee hee...

Did you ever see 'A Taste of Cherry' ? Or 'The Passenger' ?

There aren't too many films with more plot than 'Lost Highway'... and it has lots of MTV-speed cuts for you to sprinkle on your corn flakes too.

I thought it was entertaining, not a bad thriller with some reasonable gore and a twist that did not come too soon.

It had a few scenes of real suspense and terror, really well done. But I hated the twist. I thought it strange and completely unbelievable, and really misconceived.

Agreed, but von Trier is not involved with any of those. He needs to learn how to do it effectively, perhaps he could watch Hitchcock or Robert Altman for some tips on how to do it. And I was not referring to a sequence in the movie, but the opening credits where Lars tells us he did everything. I don't pay to watch men wank.

no and yes. I've also seen the notably average Russian Ark, shot in one continuous take.

You're not making a very convincing case, Lost Highway is 14 years old and far from Lynchs' best. I truly wonder how Lynch gets funding for his work any more, he has had a long series of duds. I guess the video rentals of Mulholland Drive , rented to the lovers of hot lesbian sex are buying his groceries these days.

The government should do something.
