cybercoma
Then explain what the reserve powers are and why they're there. In almost 150 years they have never been used. Even King-Byng resulted in an overhaul of the office of the Governor General thanks to his interference. If those reserve powers were ever used, the resulting fallout would end our ties to the monarchy forever.
Smallc
That would depend on why they were used. You seem quite confident about something that isn't nearly as clear cut as you want to make it out to be. Here's an example for you - 1975, in Australia, a country far less friendly to the Crown. g_bambino
If those reserve powers were ever used, the resulting fallout would end our ties to the monarchy forever. Then What makes the prime minister step down when he's lost the confidence of the House of Commons? Why did Adrienne Clarkson say she wouldn't have permitted an election had Paul Martin lost the confidence of the House just a couple of months after the last election? Why did Harper have to wait in December 2008 for two hours while the Governor General decided whether or not to follow his advice to prorogue parliament? Why did Harper have to face the House of Commons again in January 2009, rather than simply leaving parliament shut? I don't think you have a clue how our system works.
