ZenOps Posted May 15, 2011 Report Posted May 15, 2011 http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20110510/bs_nm/us_postalservice_earnings Its been pushed up a month from October based on the $8.5 billion loss last year. The US post is of course the largest employer in the US. If they were to be bailed out, they would estimate to lose $238 billion in the next ten years. http://abcnews.go.com/US/us-postal-service-verge-broke-billions-dollars-red/story?id=12133108 Has its time come? Obsolete? Should the workers be retrained or left to their own devices to find alternate work? Quote
Guest American Woman Posted May 15, 2011 Report Posted May 15, 2011 Should the workers be retrained or left to their own devices to find alternate work? I think we should just throw them to the wolves - and sit back and watch as they go postal. Or we could just raise their borrowing limit, like Canada did, as they cut Saturday mail, saving $33 billion over the next ten years. That, along with raising the price of stamps, would be a start. I can't see where the time has come to ditch the service just yet. Quote
Moonlight Graham Posted May 15, 2011 Report Posted May 15, 2011 From article: The mail carrier, which delivers about 40 percent of the world's mail... That number seems somewhat unbelievable to me. So maybe they were going to completely close up on Saturdays and close the depots on Saturday. Quote

I realize there's not Saturday mail delivery in Canada, but there is Saturday delivery in the United States, which is what I was referring to. I was saying raise their borrowing limit, as happened in Canada, and get rid of Saturday mail delivery as a means to help the situation. Edited to add: The "they" I was referring to was the USPS, which in re-reading my post, wasn't real clear. Edited May 15, 2011 by American Woman Quote

Saturday mail has not existed since 1969 in Canada, so your post was confusing. Your post makes it seem like it was something recent that the Canada Post has done. It has been like this for over 40 years with no Saturday delivery. Your claim about saving millions because of it is confusing. Edited to add: The "they" I was referring to was the USPS, which in re-reading my post, wasn't real clear. Still is not very clear. Quote

Your claim about saving millions because of it is confusing. My claim about saving billions was in regards to the US postal system, since that's what the thread is about. Since that's what my post was in response to. Again. The reference to raising their borrowing limit, as happened in Canada, along with getting rid of Saturday delivery was suggested as ways to help the situation and to save billions in the United States; Again, that's what the thread is about. Still is not very clear. Sorry, that's about as clear as I can make it. Edited May 15, 2011 by American Woman Quote
