What a four days for freedom it's been!

The period started promisingly with the sun peaking out on the Royal Wedding on April 29. This wedding was a celebration of the country and culture that mothered and midwifed both of our countries, and gave the world an unparelled run of freedom and good government. There is no question that Britain left her former colonies and Dominions in much better shape than any other European power. It was a great show and hopefully a prelude to a bright future for the monarchy of Britain, Canada, Australia, Jamaica and Barbados, and other lands (edited to reflect post below).

Then Osama bin Laden died in a well-deserved hail of gunfire. I carry no flag for Barack Obama, but it seems that he made mostly right decisions here. Most of all, this shows that murderous, nihilistic and senseless attacks on the West don't end well for the attacker.

Finally, the sparkling election results on May 2, 2011. Not only did the CPC earn a majority, but earned it without needing Quebec MP's for the numbers. The closest parellel occurred in 1917 with the Borden government. Even that was a coalition. Given Obama's demarche as a world leader and promoter of U.S. or Western interests (with the exception noted above) Harper stands head and shoulders as a world leader as well as a Canadian leader.

I am proud to have you as a neighbor.

Erm... And Canadian monarchy, thank you very much! ;)

But, otherwise, I agree; I've had the same thought over the last couple of days. An almost concurrence of major events that were all, shockingly, mostly good news.

Gee, I hate to be a downer but the verdict is still out on the election and OBL's death, did he? Doubts are still there around the world. The wedding, they will do just fine because they both picked each other this time around.

He sparkles because he can't get national support? Wow. Blogging Tory Canadians do love their Dear Leader.

First of all you're forgetting about other sites that like him. Second of all he did well in all provinces but Quebec and NL. Not national support?

By the way, how did the NDP do in Manitoba which along with Saskatchewan and BC is almost the NDP's home court? I guess they don't love the NDP any more in Ontario, after a bunch of not so many Rae(s) of sunshine during it's Ontario mandate.

I never once said Jack Layton sparkles.

I guess some people like to find the cloud on every plate of silver or gold. I'm glad the wedding has your stamp of approval.

You seem to admire the N.D.P. greatly.

That's still different from saying that the election results were "sparkling" because your favoured party not only won a majority but also did this without winning many seats in QC. I was glad the NDP did well but their failure to win many seats in certain provinces is not an added bonus for me.

For an NDP backer the added bonus would have been (but was not) a countrywide surge in support.

Yes, that makes sense. BubberMiley (and I) were just questioning why you seemed especially pleased with the fact that the CPC won a majority "without needing Quebec MP's for the numbers."

Not sure what any of thesde events have to do with "freedom." The electon because we have the freedom to vote? Maybe?

The wedding because Royalty has the freedom to marry? ??

Their support rose in almost every part of the country.

If you weren't a reflexive left-hater, you'd already know this.

By a few ridings per province, yes. And I am a leftist, not a left-hater. Many who consider themselves "progressives" are actually quite reactionary. I'll be happy to e-mail anyone a well-written article on this point. It's from a magazine I subscribe to so I think the links are private and pay-only but I have the PDF.

I believe you're a conservative, actually; I don't know why you'd consider it an insult. I don't.

Many who consider themselves "progressives" are actually quite reactionary.

Well of course; many who consider themselves "centrists" or "libertarians" or "fiscal conservatives" or "mainstream liberals" are quite reactionary. I'm not sure why "progressives" are expected to be free of the human condition, nor why those who most dislike them believe they should be held to higher standards.
