Michael Ignatieff:

“We’ve got a guy like Marc Garneau whose flown into space and could run Industry Canada with his one hand tied behind his back, right? That’s what I’m talking about. Real political experience,” Mr. Ignatieff said Friday.

...

“Who’s going to stand up and defend the firearms registry? Jack Layton wasn’t there on the firearms registry, just ask the victims of the Polytechnique,” he said.

Did you say "dumb" or unconscious?

Mind you, I think Garneau has more political experience than Ignatieff but then, so does Homer Simpson

With the reference to Polytechnique, quite crude but then with reference to McKenzie King (Who actually was a Liberal PM) (Wikipedia)---"He kept secret his beliefs in spiritualism and use of mediums to stay in contact with departed associates and particularly with his mother"

Where did they get this guy?

In fairness to Ignatieff, a lot of people would say that upper-management types are not well-grounded in reality, have their heads in the clouds, and have some out-of-this-world ideas about what's actually feasible... so maybe Garneau's space-man experience is ideally suited to running Industry Canada.

"Ask the victims..." ...is Dubya helping Ignatieff write this stuff?

I saw the end of the English debate where Ignatieff explained how the gun registry keeps police officers safe. I thought that was one of the Dumb Quotes of the Campaign.

Maybe Ignatieff can "ask the victims" of the Mayerthorpe RCMP massacre how well that worked.

Iggy's statement on Polytechnique are stomach turningly wrong. How dare he accuse Jack Layton a man who in 1991 helped start the white ribbon campaign an international movement started in Canada to remember those victims of violence against women of not protecting women. While he has been outside Canada encouraging targeting assignations Jack has been here making a real difference. HOW DARE HE!

Admittedly Garneau is smart, and in great physical shape, and a good guy. But the attributes that made him a good astronaut and a good scientist do not necessarily translate to good business or good politics. Silly statement on Iggy's part. (Again.)

The government can't give anything to anyone without having first taken it from someone else.
