scouterjim Posted April 18, 2011 Report Posted April 18, 2011 (edited) Pavel Kulisek is a Canadian jailed in Mexico. His family wants the Canadian government to get him out. They have been trying to get a meeting with Harper, but so far haven't been able to do so. Today, Iggy used their tragedy as a photo-op when he contacted them for a meeting, bringing the media with him. Whilst I condemn Harper for not seeing the family, I doubly condemn Iggy for using their problem as a cheap publicity stunt. But had Harper decided to visit the family, do you doubt for one second he would have done the same? Quote

scouterjim Posted April 18, 2011 Author Report Posted April 18, 2011 I don't disagree that Harper (or Layton, for that matter) would bring the media, but it is the fact that Iggy approached them in order to use a meeting as a photo-op. The family did NOT contact him as they have Harper. Quote I have captured the rare duct taped platypus.
Slim MacSquinty Posted April 18, 2011 Report Posted April 18, 2011 Yes pretty sick, what about Iggy saying over and over in the dabate about Harper being all about the politics of fear? Have you seen the latest Liberal TV ads? By god if we don't vote Liberal there appears to be a very good chance some sort of Conservative brown shirts will show up at my door with growling dogs to take away my rights. Fact is our slow decline into socialism has already been largley achieved in a gentle voice re-assuring me that it's for my own good. It breeds in the hearts of the misinformed good intentioned mindless followers who cling to state imposed health care and baby bonus cheques as s sign of our superior civilization. Quote
YEGmann Posted April 18, 2011 Report Posted April 18, 2011 Whilst I condemn Harper for not seeing the family. How is it Harper's business? The sad story is three-year long. Mexican govermnent is responsive but it follows Mexican laws. Why did media make it news yesterday? Quote

bush_cheney2004 Posted April 18, 2011 Report Posted April 18, 2011 Lately, such melodrama appears to be a staple in Canadian elections. Back in 2008, it was Brenda Martin. http://www.100reasons.ca/66/ Any Canadian with his/her tits in a foreign wringer can count on some attention if the election timing is just right! scouterjim Posted April 18, 2011 Author Report Posted April 18, 2011 The Liberals and Cons both suck so terribly. give Layton a few days, and he will jump on this as well. Quote I have captured the rare duct taped platypus.
YEGmann Posted April 18, 2011 Report Posted April 18, 2011 it is Harper's business as he is the leader of the present government. You mean it is a responsibility of the Prime Minister to contact family of every Canadian having troubles abroad? I disagree. I think we have Foreign Affairs for such situations, embasies and consulates. And OK, say Harper met the family, what should he do then? Talk to Mexican president and demand accelerated trial? This is insane. It will be outright embarassment (we already know the response of the Mexican government). Liberals will be the first who will be crying bloody murder "Harper interferes into affairs of an independant country!" This is why I agree with you that Ignatieff is cheap here. This stuff is done quietly by diplomats. Quote

This stuff is done quietly by diplomats. Iggy told them that if he is made PM, he will immediately phone Pres. Calderon of Mexico to get this straightened out. Empty promise. As to Harper, all he has to do is meet the family and tell them that he sympathizes, but, as you said, we have Foreign Affairs to deal with it. It would be that easy. capricorn Posted April 18, 2011 Report Posted April 18, 2011 And OK, say Harper met the family, Great precedent. Since not all these families reside in Canada, he'd have to travel the world meeting with the families of Canadians who got in trouble abroad. Quote "We always want the best man to win an election. Bob Posted April 18, 2011 Report Posted April 18, 2011 (edited) Look, if this guy's innocent, Harper should step up and say something - that doesn't necessarily mean he should do what Ignatieff did, however. If he's likely guilty of what he's being accused of (which wouldn't surprise me, I don't really trust Eastern Europeans... although at least he isn't Russian), then let him deal with Foreign Affairs and the Mexican legal system. YEGmann Posted April 18, 2011 Report Posted April 18, 2011 Look, if this guy's innocent, Harper should... How does Harper know whether the guy is innocent? In this particular case the family wants an accelerated legal process and they have received a response from the Mexican government, that the process is going in accordance with Mexican laws, they have to wait. If I was Harper, and I cared about this issue, I'd have a team that I trust do some research on this case and have them give me an unofficial analysis/judgment. If it's a very difficult thing to do, though, at least I'd try to make some moves to at least speed up the process of the legal system. As has been said, however, the PM has more pressing priorities and cannot be expected to deal with this intensively. Quote My blog - bobinisrael.blogspot.com - I am writing on it, again!
