Smallc Posted April 14, 2011 Report Posted April 14, 2011 (edited) Lots of ideas sound great until people have to reach into their wallets. And yet we'll get jets. Canadians are generally willing to spend the money. Edited April 14, 2011 by Smallc Quote
Scotty Posted April 15, 2011 Author Report Posted April 15, 2011 (edited) Of course you'd get a different answer. If you asked random people in Toronto if they wanted our military to fly 40 year old jets into battle they'd all say no. If you asked them if they wanted to spend $30B to make sure they didn't have to, they'd also say no. It doesn't help that people deliberately use the largest number anyone can find to scare them. Thirty billion? Hey, want to buy a Dodge Caravan? Step right up, only $250,000! Yes, a quarter million would be the cost to operate a Dodge Caravan for 20 years. But of course, people don't think of that when they buy a car or truck. They only deal with the purchase price, not the cost of parts and replacement, insurance, depreciation and operation for the lifetime of the vehicle. The only people that dont factor in operating costs when buying a vehicle are idiots. People DONT just look at the sticker price. They look at how much fuel it will burn while they are running it, and they look at dependability and reliability, and consumers place a lot of stock companies and models with good records as far as repairs and maintenance. You probably just know some really stupid car buyers. Quote I question things because I am human. And call no one my father who's no closer than a stranger
Moonbox Posted April 15, 2011 Report Posted April 15, 2011 And yet we'll get jets. Canadians are generally willing to spend the money. Some are, some aren't. We need to replace the F-18 either way. The costs our out of control for the F35 even from US sources are estimating the final price to be in the $120M/plane area instead of the $75M Harper is insisting on. How many Canadians would vote for a $60B fighter jet program? Pas moi. 99% of Canadians don't know anything about what I just said, however. Scotty Posted April 16, 2011 Author Report Posted April 16, 2011 Thats complete BS quite frankly. The only people that dont factor in operating costs when buying a vehicle are idiots. Nobody factors in operating costs for the next two decades, and calls that the price of the car. And that is exactly what we're doing with these jets. Battletoads Posted April 16, 2011 Report Posted April 16, 2011 Plus, spending on maintinence now will save big bucks on replacement later. BC is going to have their Hydro bills double over the next 10 years because successive governments kept the rates too low to do infrastrucure upgrades so now they have to be done or we will be suffering brown-outs. (A different artcle quoted 30% increase in 3 years.) You can thank the right wing BC Liberals for that. Quote "You can lead a Conservative to knowledge, but you can't make him think."
Bonam Posted April 16, 2011 Report Posted April 16, 2011 It's not that there hasn't been money for upgrades and more hydro in BC. On the contrary, the capital has been there. What has consistently stopped every new project in its tracks has been environmental reviews/concerns. Site C has been in the approval process for how many decades now? Quote
RNG Posted April 16, 2011 Report Posted April 16, 2011 You can thank the right wing BC Liberals for that. I think not. It has been the NDP wanting money pissed away on useless unproductive sh .. tuff. Quote The government can't give anything to anyone without having first taken it from someone else.
Battletoads Posted April 16, 2011 Report Posted April 16, 2011 I think not. It has been the NDP wanting money pissed away on useless unproductive sh .. tuff. The BC Liberals Have been in power for a decade. For that Decade they've had either a crushing or commanding majority. So I have to say the 'blame it on the NDP' tactic seems kinda pathetic. Bonam Posted April 16, 2011 Report Posted April 16, 2011 (edited) I think not. It has been the NDP wanting money pissed away on useless unproductive sh .. tuff. Like the fast ferries. At least we managed to sell them off for 4.2% of the original cost... I guess as socialist projects go, a 96% loss isn't bad. Edited April 16, 2011 by Bonam Quote
