maplesyrup Posted June 23, 2004 Report Posted June 23, 2004 Seat projections are showing a minority government. All this talk about the Bloc and the New Democrats involved in the government process is probably a mute point. Let's face it, Conservatives and Liberals are fronts for Bay Street, and/or our big businesses, with their shadowy lobbyists in Ottawa. Thomas d'Aquino will be the one to determine the makeup of our next minority government. Everyone is being smoked here discussing issues like abortion, etc. These social issues are sidebar concerns used to distract Canadians from what is really going on behind the scenes. And it is working welll, isn't it? Do you seriously think either Harper or Martin give a s*** about the abortion issue, the same-sex issue, etc.? What they do care about is how much they can privatize the health care system and reward their backroom buddies with government contracts. maplesyrup Posted June 23, 2004 Author Report Posted June 23, 2004 Corporate Power and Public Purpose Thomas d'Aquino is President of the Business Council on National Issues, an organization composed of some one hundred and fifty chief executive officers of major enterprises in Canada. Formed in 1976, the Business Council is the means chosen by senior business leaders to contribute personally to the development of public policy and to the shaping of national priorities. Member corporations are drawn from the full range of industry, trade, commerce, and finance in Canada. These companies administer in excess of $450 billion in assets which produce annually more than $170 billion in revenues. The member companies employ almost two million Canadians. Mr. d'Aquino, a lawyer, is President of Intercounsel, an Ottawa-based consulting group which offers advice on federal government policy, legislation, and regulation, and on matters related to international business and trade. In addition, he is Professor Adjunct of the Faculty of Law of the University of Ottawa, where he teaches, at the graduate level, a course on the law of international business transactions and the regulation of multinational enterprise. Has anyone here even heard of this guy or this organization? Quote An education isn't how much you have committed to memory, or even how much you know. Bionic Antboy Posted June 23, 2004 Report Posted June 23, 2004 Thomas d'Aquino is currently the President and Chief Executive of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives.... http://www.ceocouncil.ca which used to be the BCNI. I only became aware of the CEO Council earlier this year, when researching more about lobby groups in Canada. That's when I learned of their history. For those who are curious... From www.thefreedictionary.com... The Business Council on National Issues (BCNI) was an important lobbying group in Canada. They are most notable for their pro-free trade advocacy during the Prime Ministership of Brian Mulroney that led to the introduction of the Canadian-American Free Trade Agreement. During this period they were led by Tom D'Aquino. In the 1988 Canadian election the BCNI spent millions of dollars on pro-Tory advertisements in support of free-trade. It is now known as the Canadian Council of Chief Executives. The current CCCE makes it's agenda clear, and is interesting reading. Considering the influence this small number of men have in the corridors of Ottawa, I'd highly recommend reading their website. Quote
maplesyrup Posted June 23, 2004 Author Report Posted June 23, 2004 I would imagine in reality d'Aquino is the most powerful person in Canada, and much more powerful than our prime minister, and also that his organization is much more powerful than than the Canadian government. Our country is run quite secretly out of view of the media and kept hidden from the average Canadian. Quote An education isn't how much you have committed to memory, or even how much you know. The CCCE does has a LOT of influence. I'd like to see more coverage of them from news media other than RobTV Quote
August1991 Posted June 24, 2004 Report Posted June 24, 2004 d'Aquino came into being, I believe, to support Mulroney in 1988 during the free trade election. I think it would be wrong to say that he is a Bay Street mogul or whatever. Gadfly might be a better description. You underestimate the desire of all these guys to be top dog. They are very competitive, in particular with each other. One would never let another get the whole cake. Quote
