I'm thinking the budget will never get a chance to be voted on. The Opposition is going to want to make this an election about transparency and ethics, so the Government will fall on Friday.

And as a sidenote, I was utterly wrong. Even two or three weeks ago I thought this was just going to be the regular election posturing we've seen over the last couple of years. But this looks like the real thing.

The government would want to fall on the budget because they would have huge photo-op's to tell the story about how the opposition (the socialist/seperatist coalition ) stopped them from implementing that budget.

The Opposition would want to take the government down on the ethical issues because they could frame the narrative of the campaign on the trust issues aroung Mr.Harper.I'm not sure that has really stuck...Yet...

Actually,I was watching Mr.Brison put the contempt motion forward and there was an interruption about the Governor-General wanting the presence of the House in the Senate.I thought,at least for a moment,that Harper had dissolved Parliament before the motion was even going to be presented...

I agree. It looks like the Liberals will introduce a non-confidence motion (based on contempt) on Thursday and it will be voted on Friday. This will occur before any vote on the budget.

Harper will go to the GG on the weekend to request a dissolution of Parliament. He can choose either May 2nd or May 9th for an election and I bet that Harper chooses the shorter campaign.

So, I predict an election on 2 May 2011.

I sort of agree with you here. The posturing was getting extreme but others convinced me that Layton would blink and I honestly thought that he would.

However the government falls, the Tories will claim that the opposition did not support the government's budget and the Liberals will claim that the government fell because of its dishonesty/unethical behaviour. But such claims were a given anyway.

I don't think we're going to have any surprises in this election. You've pretty much pegged what all sides will be saying. The Tories will be dropping the word "coalition" so often we'll think it's a new curse word.

Harper is gonna be walkin to the GG house Saturday mornin.The conservatives are gonna get hit hard with something thats never bein done before in Canadian politics on a contempt motion.

The media is downplaying the importance,and once every so many years the media gets it wrong and in my opinion this is one of those times.

I think only the election will tell whether the contempt motion has any major political fallout. What it will have, however, is a substantial long-term procedural effect both in Canada and in the Commonwealth, and will probably be cited for many years to come in other Westminster parliaments. This will be one for the history books.

He won't fall on the budget. That vote doesn't come until next week. He'll fall on the contempt motion on Friday. Even the Tories seem to realize that one now.

Politics for me has to have at least a 50% entertainment value or I lose interest

Right now Canadian politics is at arond 72.46% entertainment value(I just came up with that figure because it amuses me)

But I think that value ratio is much lower if you are a conservative.Because so much is at stake for Harper the conservatives don't really want an election.Status quo is the motto for the conservatives now.

The conservatives don't like spring elections(just ask Kim Campbill)
