An insurance card means both eligibility and benefits coverage depending on the procedure and plan...it is not payment. Co-pays and deductibles still apply. But don't worry, wannabe pretenders like you always get that part of the story wrong.

Aren't they ALL just methods of payment? I ain't wrong at all...

...and Americans get a lot more too.

Canadians don't pay as much, so you can't receive as much. However on a dollar for dollar expenditure the Canadian system is more effective.

The US system has diminishing returns and of course the failure at the lower end of the spectrum is a disgrace.

Ironically, I grew up with some self made "Millionaires" in the 60s. Infact their monies were quite extensive by the 90s and they had been in the states from late 70s onwards.

Then I discovered this year that they returned to Canada about 4 years ago.

Broke with Medical Bills while in their retirement.

I was shocked, totally shocked. I don't know how this could have happened.

Now they are here, on our dime and we are looking after their medical needs.

Yea...that's why Canadians head for the border when they get tired of the very patriotic wait times, and why several provinces have standing contracts with American health care providers.

Some do, some don't, WE have that option, you don't... Get the picture? :D

That is a very common story about people living in the United States...

My ex worked in the states for some 12 years as a travel nurse... She worked at a variety of Hospitals throughout Florida as a Cardiac Intensive Care Nurse (her specialty)...

In '99 she had some minor heart problem herself that had to be treated, the company she worked for had a co-pay health insurance plan that paid 80% of her costs and her portion of the bills was still over $11,000.00 that she paid out of pocket to the Hospital she was working for at the TIME...

So it's easy to see how quickly one can go broke from medical bills in the US when they come rolling in...

It was one of the reasons she came back to Winnipeg to live and work...

Canada has the most expensive and least effective universal access health care "system" in the world according to OECD numbers. Other nations do much better.

No rookie...we have already been over this many many times around here. Catch up if you can.

Other members have astutely pointed out that party hacks like you always make excuses for shortcomings in the Canadian health care system by pointing at the United States, ignoring obvious deficiencies and better solutions in other nations.

....look...there goes another Canadian to the Mayo Clinic! ;)

Another thing, can you imagine any clerk or nurse being ABLE to tell someone how much "treatment" in Canada costs?

Imagine? No , not really.

I know they can. Been there w an American when she needed treatment for her son.

He had swimmers ear and an infection. They cleaned his ears, gave him anti biotics, paid about $50.

Gave her the swab to go next door to get confirmed what he had, test results back within the hour, and she paid $30 or $35 , cant recall.

She loved it !

By the way, some treatments are very cheap here. For instance a Docs office is paid $12 for having your ears treated.

Didnt you say you wrote papers on this very subject......or perhaps you....

are just blowing smoke out your ass again? Thought so...

Yeah, thought so.

No, I really enjoy our American friends thread drift. Sorry if the Republican is unable to stay on message.

Other great tall tales from BC2004 include Americans Freedom to Travel to Cuba.

As was said before. Ignatieff and Bush Cheney 2004 will be reunited before the year is out.

Dear lady, I could be wrong about "dual citizenship", things do change,...

There's no "could be" about it. You most definitely are wrong.

Based on the U.S. Department of State regulation on dual citizenship (7 FAM 1162), the Supreme Court of the United States has stated that dual citizenship is a "status long recognized in the law" and that "a person may have and exercise rights of nationality in two countries and be subject to the responsibilities of both. The mere fact he asserts the rights of one citizenship does not without more mean that he renounces the other," (Kawakita v. U.S., 343 U.S. 717) (1952). link

So in 1952 the Supreme Court ruled that dual citizenship was long recognized in the law. But yeah. You're wrong because "things do change." And of course you were wrong in spite of all the information I had posted prior to your false claim proving otherwise. At this point I'm satisfied that I've got your number, which is why I won't be wasting any more of my time with you on this after this response.

but I'm right about US vs Canadian Health Care Costs... I've even written articles on it... I've done the research...

There's been many an article written containing false information and if you've written articles about how health care in the United States costs at least ten times more than it does in Canada, your articles would be among them.

To clarify...

Is every "Health" related cost in the US 10x as expensive as the same "Health" related cost in Canada, probably not, but overall, "Health Care" in the the US costs 10x (or more) than it costs in Canada, that's simply a fact...

No, it's not a fact. It's false.

As well every insurance premium Americans pay, regardless of employer or individual source, etc., is a form of private TAX on Americans that Canadians don't have to pay for their Health Care...

Canadians pay taxes for their health care. They also "pay" for surgeries that they have to wait a long time for in the form of lost income while they sit at home, unable to work, waiting for their surgery. Furthermore, it has nothing to do with your ludicrous claim.

Americans pay almost double what Canadians do for TAX based Health Care that doesn't cover everyone in the US whereas in Canada it does cover everyone...

As I've already pointed out, that has nothing to do with the discussion. Not all Americans even pay taxes, so that's another discussion entirely; one I'm not interested in getting into.

There are certain advantages Americans get from that higher cost as well, like no Doctor shortage, although that too varies, and things like MRIs and other more sophisticated equipment being readily available and more accessible in the US than in Canada...

True.

As for that OHIP card, that's completely wrong, as previously stated, it's not an insurance card as you seem to think, it's proof of residency and that you are covered by that provinces' health plan and nothing more... There's no "reimbursement" element to it...

I know exactly what OHIP is. And yes, there is a reimbursement element to it if one is in Ontario needing health care and one isn't covered under OHIP. In other words, if one is a Canadian from another province. I've had many people tell me this. What I've stated is exactly what happened.

WHO told you the cost and HOW would the person you were talking to even know it?

The medical personnel told me. Who do you think? Some self-perceived know-it-all on a web board? And they knew because it's their job to know it.

There's no "fee schedule (in most cases)" for someone to look up...

Apparently there is. Apparently things go on that you're unaware of. Of course there are fee schedules. How do you think the medical center/doctors get paid for their services? How else would you know that services in Canada are generally less than in the United States? How else would you know what things cost in Canada?

Yes...it will give him time to pen a new book:

Living Daffy in a Ghaddafi World

I think it will be titled.....

Bombing Bushes Buddy.

On Monday, Gaddafi accomplished one of history's great diplomatic turnarounds when Secretary of State Condeleezza Rice announced that the U.S. was restoring full diplomatic relations with Libya and held up the Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya as "a model" for others to follow

That's AW for you.

I guess...

I'm too new on this board to be judgemental about the people on MLW... I can only go by what they post and reply accordingly...

As long as AW is happy with what she has and thinks she knows, that's really all that matters...

Personally I have no axes to grind nor an ego to stroke, so it matters very little to me what people say or do on a board like this... :)

I'm here to have some FUN, meet some new people, share some of my vast knowledge, perhaps even learn something new, and simply observe people, which is what I do...
