“Our government is committed to putting real criminals behind bars...

New powers will soon be given to the general public allowing them to make a citizens arrest. We needed this law back before Caledonia first happened.

Ottawa's going to make it easier for people to defend themselves and their property against criminal acts, Prime Minister Stephen Harper says.

Now the residents of Caledonia will able to defend the rule of law when they see it being broken. Allowing citizens to detain lawbreakers until the police come. This will come in very handy to let the citizens take back their town from the law breaking Natives.

Now a citizen's arrest authority applies when it isn’t possible for a police officer to nab a suspect. Source

This type of law is well overdue as many segments of our society have been getting away with murder. Citizens will now be able to monitor the dregs of our society.

The public will now be able to make citizens arrests on these groups. We should start forming citizens groups to sweep our streets clean once this becomes law.

I am simply informing people of the new citizen arrest item which will soon become law. I would've thought that was an important development.

Many people are excited about this new common sense amendment to our laws. I'm sad you aren't one of them.

Oh dont we wish.

Sadly, Mr C is trolling, trying to light some people up, but only idiots and morons will back him on this. Why??

Because mr C never read the release.

This "new law" , announced by none other than the worst politician in the bunch, Julian Fatassino, allows one to protect and or arrest someone damaging your property on your own property. It is extended to say property in a parking lot (car?)

Really, more theatre from the "lets make people scared of living in Canada and build more prisons" Party, The Cons. So appropos a name. Sadly, there is no one to stand up and counter them.

Yes, there is. Criminals are very much against conservatives. They love liberals. 'Specially Liberal lawyers.

I think you missed this section in the "Rules and Guidelines" at the top of the forum:

Do not use diminutives or character substitutions in proper names that are not recognized by the original person to whom the reference is being made. For example, Prime Minister Stephen Harper does not identify himself as Stevie therefore, it is unacceptable to identify him as Stevie. Likewise, Paul Martin does not identify himself as Mr. Dithers, therefore, it is unacceptable to identify him as Mr. Dithers.

I don't want to see you get banned, so I thought I would give you the heads up.

guyser did the same thing calling the Tories "Cons". Also against the rules.

It's just too bad that this common sense law came only after something bad happened.

Same sort of thing that happened with the guy who was defending his home from being firebombed was arrested and charged while the people doing the fire bombing walked with no charges.

Something is seriously messed up with this country when you cannot defend your person or property.

Not according to the rule posted above. Libs and Cons should be ok, if not , inform me and I will amend.

What bad thing? Oh....you dont mean the shopowner in TO do you? Chances are, he would still be arrested because he did not witness it and it was off his property. (We shall see)

Considering it has always been legal to defend your property , still is legal and always will be.....what possible point could you be making, apart from trolling?

I think the point had to do with that shop keeper in Markham who was repeatedly robbed by a guy and finally grabbed him and locked him up in a van till the police arrived. The perp admitted in court that he was returning to rob the shop keeper again! Yet the Crown charged the shop keeper with illegal arrest and assault!

So when you say it's always been legal to defend your property, still is legal and always will be...you may be technically correct but in practice that often has not been the case. It's another one of those areas where if such a shop keeper or any private citizen caught in the same predicament were to take it to the Supreme Court, he would no doubt win in a heartbeat. The problem of course is that most citizens can't AFFORD to take a case that far! So they are forced to "cave".

Lately this seems to be a common tactic with some levels of government and some corporations. They know that they don't have to be in the right, when they're attacking someone who doesn't have big bucks to fight back!

It's a perversion of the law but it happens, all the same. Caledonia is a perfectly good example. As Christie Blatchford documented over and over again in her book "Helpless", the rule of law was suspended in that town during the protest, because it was politically expedient for McGuinty's government. If you haven't read the book yourself then you have absolutely no idea of what went on. The suspension of law was NOT just some racist opinion! It was truly fact!

I'm as cautious as you when dealing with some of Mr. Canada's claims. He's still on my ignore list. Still, that doesn't mean that some things may still be true and valid.

Yes, exactly Wild Bill. I would've thought these socialists would be up to date on current events happening in Canada but I guess I can always be wrong.

The public will soon be able to make citizens arrests to protect their property and businesses. It goes to a vote in the Commons next week. I'd love to see the Liberals vote this down but not even they are that stupid.

Technically, it's not. I pointed out Saipan's comment because he was being blatantly inflammatory, while I don't actually agree with the rule that one ought not to shorten the proper names of parties (ie: Libs or Cons).

See:

Avoid using abbreviated terms such as "Cons" or "Libs" that may be offensive to the group to which they refer. Full names are best and official abbreviations are acceptable.

I think we all ,as citizens not only have a right to protect our and our nieghbours property and lives from bad guys ,we have a duty to do what we can ,even if your only capable of picking up the phone to call 911 or if more able bodied to apprehend and hold a bad guy for police with as much force as required. As we see in Caledonia the people have been deserted by the Police and are left helpless ,they must protect themselves until the rule of law is once again implemented by reluctant politicians and Police brass who left the victims to fend for themselves. I feel sorry for the rank and file cops who had to obey their orders knowing it was wrong.

The problem is, that unlike police, we have to use bare hands - or else.
